Carolyn Matthews Maddamma, age 73, passed away at her home in Manassas, VA on August 1, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.
Carolyn was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband of 34 years, Gino Richard Maddamma, and her brother Doug Matthews of Roslindale, MA. She is survived by her children: Ginger Maddamma Jabs and husband Greg Jabs, Richard Maddamma and fiancé Nievina (Anne) Duco; and Miki Maddamma Phelps, all of Manassas, VA. She is also survived by her sister Pamela Matthews Hoffman of Manassas, VA; grandchildren Cherie Jabs Newman and husband Greg Newman of Virginia Beach, VA; Bryan Jabs of Philadelphia, PA; Matthew Brewster and wife Brittany Ortiz-Brewster and great-grandchildren Logan and Landon Brewster of Houston, TX; and Caleb Foster and wife Emily Foster of Varina, VA; Raith Phelps of Manassas, VA; and Cory Maddamma of Centreville, VA; sister-in-law Sarah Lamitie, niece Claire Lamitie and nephew Finley Matthews of Roslindale, MA; nephew Mark Hoffman of College Park, MD.
She was born September 4, 1943 in New Castle, PA to parents Finley Arthur Matthews of New Castle, PA and Erla Mae Studebaker Matthews of Slippery Rock, PA, both deceased. She is a graduate of Boardman High School in Youngstown, OH. Gino and Carolyn were married on March 18, 1961 in Winchester, VA and settled in Arlington, VA. They moved to Centreville, VA in 1972 to raise their children and were active in the Southwestern Youth Association coaching soccer and softball.
Carolyn continued her college education at George Mason University while volunteering in her children’s classrooms at London Town Elementary. She then joined Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic Region and accepted a promotion as the center administrator for the Reston and Springfield, VA medical centers. She continued her career with the Capital Planning offices in Washington, D.C., focused on the architectural design and development of the Falls Church medical center, where she retired in 1985 after a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. Thereafter, Gino and Carolyn established Aquarius Plumbing and Remodeling of Chantilly, VA.
Carolyn authored and published a book titled “On a Wing and a Prayer,” depicting stories of her childhood, raising her family, work-life and living with Multiple Sclerosis. She was always thrilled to chat and visit with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; she enjoyed traveling, interior design, and reading books on the subject of social justice – believing all people should be treated fairly, equally and with dignity.

Memorial Services will be held at 5:00 PM Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas, VA. Reception immediately following services at the home of Maddamma/Jabs, Manassas, VA.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to American Civil Liberties Union at www.aclu.org.

The Montgomery County Women’s Chorus will present a concert to benefit the Betty Ann Krahnke shelter for survivors of domestic violence. 100% of ticket sales (less any online processing fees) will go to the shelter.
