Kathleen Davis Mosby, 68, died Monday, June 5, 2017, in Manassas, Virginia.
Kathy was born in Washington, DC and raised in Ettrick, VA. She graduated from Wyoming Seminary college preparatory school in Pennsylvania. She attended Howard University and went on to finish her undergraduate degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. She also earned master’s and Ph.D. degrees in psychology at VCU. Kathy was very proud of her academic accomplishments. So, when she earned her doctorate, she lovingly sent letters to her daughter at camp signed, “Dr. Mommie”.
Kathy’s psychology internship took her to Atlanta for a year in 1977. At the completion of the internship, she returned to Virginia to begin working at the Mount Vernon Center for Community Mental Health in Alexandria. After several years at the Mount Vernon Center, she began an independent private psychology practice, transitioning to working full time in private practice in 1982. Kathy also shared her knowledge and skills by teaching as an adjunct psychology professor at George Mason University and by consulting at hospitals in Washington and Maryland. In addition, Kathy was a member of the Gestalt Institute of Richmond.
Kathy enjoyed music, tennis, the outdoors and was an avid skier. After organizing many whitewater rafting trips for her ski club in the 1980s, Kathy tried canoeing and kayaking. Kayaking became her passion. She started as a novice kayaker and ended up training for whitewater rescue in area rivers.
In addition to exploring the outdoors, Kathy was an accomplished and adventurous cook. She loved to entertain and try new recipes but Kathy was always happy to make family favorites, especially desserts.
Kathy also had a fondness for cats. She had several in her lifetime, the last of whom, Buddy, gave her great comfort.
She is survived by her daughter, Lara, and many loving cousins and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, June 11, at Pierce Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from noon until 1:00 at the funeral home.
Donations in Kathy’s honor may be made to 4 Paws Rescue Team in Merrifield, VA.
