Driver goes wild at Occoquan Craft Show, nearly hits cop

Police want to know who nearly run down an officer at the Occoquan Craft Show.

A red Jeep was spotted by the uniformed officer driving in an area of town that had been blocked off by cones. The officer went to speak to the driver, and as he walked out in front of the Jeep the driver accelerated, according to police.

The officer was not struck, and the driver fled the scene.

A short time later, a 911 caller reported a wreckless driver in a red Jeep in the 100 block of Gordon Boulevard, near the entrance to Interstate 95. Police arrived on the scene to find the Jeep abandoned. Extra officers, K9 units, and a police helicopter was called but were unable to find the driver.

The Jeep turned out to be a rental car, and the description of a driver did not fit the person who leased the vehicle, according to police. The vehicle sustained minor damage.

Prince William and Virginia State police continue to investigate.
