Single family home catches fire in Woodbridge

Yesterday morning, Prince William fire and rescue received a call for a fire at a home on Longhorn Drive in Woodbridge.

When arriving on the scene, Prince William fire and rescue stated they saw a fence on fire, and that the flames extended towards the back of the home.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire, and couldn’t find any extension of the fire in the home.

No one was injured.

According to Prince William fire and rescue, the family – who were home during the fire – became aware when a resident walking their dog noticed smoke at the back of the home.

The Fire Marshal’s Office has said that damages appear to be worth $15,000.

Additionally, the origin of the fire was determined to be outdoors, due to an accidental disposal of a cigarette, said Prince William fire and rescue.

More on fire safety from Prince William fire and rescue:

If you smoke, smoke outside.
Provide an area for individuals to properly extinguish and safely discard smoking materials.
Do not discard butts or ashes into mulch laden landscapes, flower beds, grassy areas, woods, etc.
Before you throw out butts and ashes, douse in water or sand.
Use deep, wide, sturdy ashtrays on a sturdy foundation, e.g. table.
Check under furniture cushions and in other places people smoke for cigarette butts that may have fallen out of sight.
Be alert when smoking! You won’t be alert if you’re sleepy, have been drinking,or have taken medicine or other drugs.
Never smoke in a home where medical oxygen is used.
If you smoke, choose fire-safe cigarettes (www.firesafecigarettes.org/); they are
less likely to cause fires.
Keep matches and lighters out of sight and reach of children.
