Press Release

VDOT working to clear ice and snow on primary roads

Motorists are encouraged to delay travel until later today if possible as Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews work to break up and remove packed down ice and snow from primary roads in the Fredericksburg area and Northern Neck.

VDOT is using a mix of sand, salt and liquid calcium chloride to combat leftover snow that is frozen to the pavement. Liquid calcium chloride is used to assist with ice melt when temperatures are below 27 degrees.

Interstate 95 is open to traffic with clear travel lanes, but isolated icy and slick spots exist, especially in shaded areas. Crews continue to apply treatment chemicals to the interstate. Motor graders are being used to remove snow from interstate shoulders and bridges.

Primary roads are passable in the Fredericksburg area and Northern Neck, but many have patches of compacted snow and ice. Sunshine and treatment chemicals are helping to improve conditions. Crews are working now to remove plowed snow from turn lanes and crossovers on primary roads, and motorists should use additional caution as they approach these areas.

Subdivisions have received an initial pass on main roads from a snowplow. This afternoon, crews will return to subdivisions to start the process of plowing every street. VDOT’s goal is to have every road passable 48 hours after a storm’s end.

VDOT crews will continue to work 24 hours a day, in 12-hour shifts, until all state-maintained road are clear and safe for travel.
