Long Lines at Polling Places Leads to Public Hearing in Woodbridge

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. – Remember the long lines, the crowded hallways, and the quiet frustration that was Election Day in portions of Prince William County?

In Woodbridge, it took some voters as long as four hours to cast their votes, with poll workers at Potomac Middle School accommodating the final voter in line just before 11 p.m. – four hours after polls had officially closed.

In January, a special commission on voting in Prince William County was organized. Now they want to hear what you have to say about the election process in the county.

More in a press release:

The Election Process Taskforce will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at 7 p.m. at the Dr. A.J. Ferlazzo Building, 15941 Donald Curtis Drive, Woodbridge, VA 22191. The purpose of the public hearing is to receive public input and comment regarding the County’s Nov. 6, 2012, Presidential Election polling process.

All residents of Prince William County are invited to attend in person and provide comment or may file written comments with the taskforce prior to the date of the hearing (April 10). Written comments should be sent to EPTF[at]pwcgov.org.

The taskforce will also hold a public hearing on the western end of the County in the near future. Information about that public hearing will be released as soon as the details are finalized.

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors appointed a 15-member, bi-partisan Election Process Taskforce in December 2012. This group is tasked with examining the election process in Prince William County.

More information about the Election Process Taskforce may be found at www.pwcgov.org/EPTF.

Long lines were seen in various precincts throughout Prince William County. Officials attributed, in part, the unusually long lines to the election being a Presidential one, which normally draws more voters than off-year elections.

This November, voters will go to the polls to elect candidates to local and state offices.
