After an unsuccessful attempt at winning the 13 to 17-year-old basketball championship last winter, Coach Delroy McDonald decided to take a different approach.
This summer, Delroy took on the responsibility of coaching in the 5 to 6-year-old basketball division.
“I want to teach my youngest son and his friends the fundamentals of the game,” Delroy said.
When dealing with children so young, patience is a virtue. Practice for his team, The X-men, was productive as the first week focused on getting the children on one accord.
The next two weeks focused on team play. The first game of the season the team suffered a 12-8 defeat, but coach knew they still had a long way to go to being the championship caliber team they could be.
The age division may have changed but the goal still remains the same and that’s to win the championship at the end of the season. The X-men defeated the Avengers 8-6 to capture coach Delroy’s first win in the division.
The team finished the season with a 2-3 record.
