LORTON, Va. — There’s a party going on at the Lorton Workhouse Arts Center this Saturday, June 23.
The center’s annual Block Party will be held from 3 p.m. 7 p.m. and will offer fun family activities, music, access to community resources, food from area restaurants and works of art.
There’s also a food drive planned, as Workhouse officials have asked for donations non-perishable food be brought to the center – items like canned foods, tuna, peanut butter, and cereal – so they can be donated to the Lorton Community Action Center, according to a press release.
At 7 p.m., the Ruthie and the Wranglers will perform as part of the Mount Vernon Nights concert series, and an under-the-stars showing of the movie, Grease, takes place at 8 p.m.
The festival comes as the Workhouse’s performing arts department discontinued its “Studio 3 for Young Audiences” program. Officials said after six months in operation, the program was no longer financially viable.
The move surprised many, especially those with small children, who had taken advantage of the weekly performances offered by the theatre troupe. The troupe’s current production of “Rapunzel” will close at the end of the month, and it will be their last.
The 100-seat theatre in which they perform will remain available for rentals. The closure will not affect other programs offered by the performing arts department, officials said.
