Prince William, VA- The Prince William Ice Center (5180 Dale Blvd, Woodbridge, VA 22193) will play host to about 1,000 skaters, families, officials and spectators from around the country this weekend during a national speedskating competition .
The Prince William Ice Center was selected to host the event because of its Olympic-size rink, proximity to area airports and because it has the capacity to hold spectators, said Alison Mittelstadt, event committee member for the U.S. Junior National Short-Track Speedskating competition. Speedskating is also growing in popularity in the greater Washington area, she said, with about one-third of the participants coming from the D.C. region.
This is the first national event the Prince William Ice Center has hosted since it reopened in September. The rink was forced to shut down in February 2010 after its roof collapsed due to heavy snowfall.
“The community is thrilled to have been selected for the Junior National Short-Track Speedskating Championships,” Discover Prince William & Manassas Executive Director Ann Marie Maher said. “Event organizers recognize that our location, facilities and hospitality are a perfect match for their needs. In Prince William, we recognize the economic benefits competitive sports have on local business.”
More than 70 skaters will descend on the Prince William rink to compete in the 2012 U.S. Junior National Short-Track Speedskating Championships starting Friday. The three-day event is free for the public to attend and will determine which eight skaters will compete in the World Junior Short-Track Championships in Melbourne, Australia.
“This is a good event for the local speedskating community and a great event to host in Prince William County,” Prince William Ice Center General Manager Bill Hutzler said. “I think area businesses and hotels will benefit as well because people come from all over the country to compete in this event.”
The event, which features skaters between the ages of 13 and 19, is one of the most prestigious events Hutzler said he has hosted at the rink, and some of the skaters may go on to qualify for the Olympic trials.
