Woodbridge, Va. — For the first time in its 25-year history, the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission carried more than 15,000 passengers on a single day. The all-time record set on Sept. 13 breaks the previous high ridership level of 14,897 passengers on June 7.
PRTC’s OmniRide and OmniLink buses on Sept. 13 carried 15,133 passengers, and officials say ridership normally rises in September which marks the end of the summer vacation season and the return of many back to work.
“We’re really heartened by the continuing ridership growth because that’s the real litmus test of the value of public transportation to the communities we serve,” said PRTC Executive Director Alfred Harf in a press release.
Last month, the transit agency gained four new buses and for the first time in years was able to add service to the crowded OmniRide commuter bus system.
The milestone comes as the transit agency is celebrating this month its 25th anniversary.
PRTC’s transit cousin, Virginia Railway Express, averages 18,800 passengers per day.
