Drivers Detoured at Triangle Street

Drivers will have to get used to a new traffic pattern at U.S. 1 and Triangle Street.

Triangle, Va. –– The intersection of U.S. 1 and Triangle Street is no more.

The street which carries traffic from U.S. 1 into a residential neighborhood closed Monday as part of the U.S. 1 widening project there.

The intersection at the north end of Triangle Street will be reconfigured as a turn around. This is a permanent change that will close the Triangle/Route1 intersection. The change is needed to allow for the safe flow of traffic on Route 1.

-Prince William County spokesman Jason Grant

Those who live on Triangle Street needn’t fear, because drivers will still be able access those homes via Squire Lane.

Transportation authorities posted signs noting detour routes around the closure.

Drivers urged to use Triangle Street south to Post Street to Old Triangle Road to Fuller Heights Road. They can also take Squire Lane directly to Triangle Street, said Grant.

The $49 million project to widen U.S. 1 in Triangle is scheduled to be complete June 30, 2012. Crews have made significant progress during the summer months, as new pavement has been laid down on the yet-to-be completed northbound side of the highway.

Prince William officials hope to duplicate the success of Occoquan’s village-like layout in a newly redeveloped Triangle.
