Stafford County, Va. — Students at Rocky Run Elementary School recently participated in the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Math-A-Thon program and raised over $14,000 to help kids battling cancer.
School officials say 253 children participated in the program and answered 50,827 math problems to raise the funds donated to St. Jude, where children are never turned away due to inability to pay, according to program materials.
A celebration was held at Rocky Run on Friday, which was attended by Stafford County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Randy Bridges, Hartwood Supervisor Gary Snellings, School Board Members Dana Reinboldt, Stephanie Johnson, Meg Bohmke and Doreen Phillips, and SCPS Supervisor of Mathematics & Science Kenya Wallach as well as representatives from corporate sponsors who aided in funding the program.
“We are so proud of our students, their families, and the Rocky Run staff for embracing Math-A-Thon and raising critical funds for St. Jude,” said PTA President Laura Dean, who has been the Parent Volunteer Coordinator of the event for the past five years. Her program’s success is such that she has been invited to St. Jude this summer to meet with other volunteer coordinators.
Dean shared that since 2003 Rocky Run students have raised nearly $80,000 through Math-A-Thon and she is currently working on expanding the program to include middle school students, as well.
