Aquia, Va. –– Researchers will begin surveying the Aquia Creek Battlefield.
Stafford County officials announced today John Milner Associates will begin studying the integrity of the battlefield, where one of the first naval engagements of the Civil War took place. What they find there will be used to formulate a comprehensive plan for preserving the area.
The area sits on public property at Aquia Landing Park and on the southern tip of Widewater State Park in Stafford County.
The survey work will begin immediately, and spokeswoman Lakesha Cole said divers will spend time under the water at the mouth of Aquia Creek to paint a comprehensive picture of the Battle of Aquia Creek.
The contract award comes the same year as the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War.
The 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Aquia Creek will be marked from May 29 to June 1, said Cole.
The researchers also want to hear from historians who’ve collected artifacts from the Civil War time period.
They’re looking for photos, maps and any other items that may be able to help researchers.
JMA has also conducted research at nearby Civil War sites in Prince William County and Quantico Marine Corps Base.
Those sites were associated with a naval blockade, said Cole.
The Maryland Historical Trust and Institute of Maritime History will also assist in the survey.
