Fire, smoke damage FBI Academy

Quantico, Va. –– An electrical fire caused damage to the FBI Training Academy at Quantico on Saturday.

Flames broke out in the basement of the building about 5 p.m., prompting fire crews from Quantico Marine Corps Base to respond to the facility.

No one was injured and officials say the fire was minor, but it produced heavy smoke which caused damage to the building.

“The fire was in one of the Academy’s main classroom buildings and extinguished quickly. No classes are scheduled tomorrow in the building,” said FBI spokeswoman Katherine Schweit.

Crews remained on the scene of the fire at 8 p.m. Saturday, assessing environmental damage and to check for possible hot spots, said Quantico spokesman Lt. Brian Villiard.

The academy is the home for much of the FBI’s training, and sits on 385 wooded acres of the Marine base.

In addition to new federal agents, the facility also serves as a training ground for state and local law enforcement officials, and as well as a learning and research center for law enforcement professionals around the world, according to the FBI.
