PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY – (Press Release) On March 5, investigators from the Crash Investigation Unit were notified of the death of the pedestrian involved in a hit and run crash that occurred in the area of Graham Park Rd. and Old Triangle Rd. in Dumfries on February 21.

An autopsy conducted on March 6 confirmed that the injuries sustained by the pedestrian were from being struck by a vehicle. The striking vehicle was possibly a light colored, Ford pickup truck. A witness to the crash took a photo of the suspected vehicle involved [see attached]. The investigation continues.

MANASSAS – (Press Release) Norfolk Southern Railroad crossing work will require midday closures (weather permitting) Monday, March 11 through Thursday, March 14 and Monday, March 18 for rail replacement by Norfolk Southern, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The closures at the railroad crossings (shown on the map with black circles) will occur as follows:

RICHMOND — Traffic safety advocates are upset by the surprise defeat of legislation that would have prohibited motorists in Virginia from holding their cellphones while driving.

They said the legislation — HB 1811 and SB 1341, which died as the General Assembly adjourned Sunday — would have helped prevent accidents caused by distracted driving.

RICHMOND — Interstate 81’s heart pumps through rural Virginia with veins that run from Tennessee to the Canadian border — a vital roadway for manufacturers, farmers and commuters.

With a long track record of crashes and congestion, Virginians looked to legislators for solutions to improving the interstate. But Sen. John Edwards, D-Roanoke, said the General Assembly passed only “a shell of a bill.”

RICHMOND — It may be a bit chilly out to zip around on a scooter, but eventually the Birds will migrate back — and could soon fly under new rules.

HB 2752, introduced by Del. Todd Pillion, R-Washington, passed the General Assembly Thursday and heads to the governor to sign. The bill gives local governments the authority to regulate vendors of dockless, motorized scooters and also updates state law regarding operation of the devices.

CULPEPER — (Press Release) The Virginia Department of Transportation will make a major safety improvement to northbound Route 29 in northern Fauquier County this summer by removing a series of hills that have contributed to significant crashes on that busy section of highway.

The project will require closing the northbound lanes of Route 29 between July 8 and Aug. 2 from just north of the entrance to Battlefield Baptist Church to just south of the Route 29/215 intersection, a distance of about one-half mile. During that time, northbound traffic will detour using Route 17 north from Warrenton to Interstate 66 at Marshall.
