The Rappahannock River near Interstate 95 is open to boaters once again — at least for now.

The river channel that passes underneath the Rappahannock Falls Bridge that carries I-95 traffic over the waterway has is now open for recreational traffic. Prior today, boaters had to use a portage that was put into place in December 2019 to get to the water.


One of four bridges that carry drivers on Interstate 95 over Route 17 near Falmouth is too low.

There are signs all over the intersection in Stafford County waring trucks that are too tall to go under the bridge to take another route. In fact, if a truck that’s too tall approaches the bridge a blaring alarm rings out in an effort to warn the driver. It can be an unsettling sound if you’re driving by when this happens.


They’re not wasting any time. Work to bring down the Truslow Road bridge over Interstate 95 will begin this week.

Demolition of the two-lane bridge will make way for an extension E-ZPass Express toll lanes that will be extended down the median of the highway to southern Stafford County, from Garrisonville Road in the northern end of the county.


Can you imagine using the shoulder lane on Interstate 95 to get where you’re going in Northern Virginia?

State transportation officials can. In fact, in a process they call “hardening the shoulders,” they’re proposing turning the emergency pull-off area on both the north and southbound sides of the highway into travel lanes.

Closures are planned for Route 28 North the first two nights, followed by Route 28 South the next two nights. Closures are needed to safely install bridge beams over the roadway and ramps.
