PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Small Town USA this isn’t. Our town today is the world, made smaller through the Internet. Today’s global melting pot is in our schools, where the universal language is an encouraging smile; language barriers are overcome with laughter; and eyes open wide with wonder.

Such expressive means to communicate are often the first resort for newcomers who represent over 105 languages and 160 cultures that are thriving in the homes of Prince William County Public School (PWCS) students.

Smoke Forces 3 from Home

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — On Wednesday, March 7 at  9 a.m., fire and rescue units responded to a structure fire in a two-story single family home located in the 7200 block of Ridgeway Drive in Woodbridge.

Fire and rescue units, upon arrival, observed smoke from the front of the home and upon entry discovered a fire in the wall behind the fireplace that extended into the attic. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.

Second Burglary Suspect Arrested

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A second man is in custody in connection a burglary that prompted a SWAT team into action last month.

U.S. Marshalls arrested Daniel James Gilliam, 18, of 14718 Birchdale Drive in Dale City. They found him March 5 at a home on Caroline Street in Woodbridge and he was taken in without incident, according to Prince William police documents.

More Commuter Parking On The Way

Construction of the new Telegraph Road Commuter Lot is underway in Woodbridge.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Construction of a new commuter lot in Woodbridge is underway next to the largest commuter lot in the state.

Dubbed the Telegraph Road Lot, when it’s finished, the new lot will boast 700 commuter parking spaces and will sit next to the Horner Road Lot at Prince William Parkway and Interstate 95. The Horner Road Lot is the largest commuter lot in the Virginia with more than 2,300 parking spaces, making it popular with carpoolers and commuter bus riders.

Marumsco Clean Up Planned

WOODBRIDGE, Va. – Keep Prince William Beautiful, Inc. (KPWB) is organizing a community clean up that will be held on Saturday, March 10, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., behind Marumsco Plaza which is located along the Route 1 corridor in Woodbridge.

New Life Anointed Ministries International is partnering with KPWB by providing volunteers to pick up trash and debris in a wooded area which is located behind the Plaza and which faces the church. A perennial stream has been a major collection point for trash from pedestrian traffic and illegal dumping due in part to its semi-secluded location.

Teachers Protest Pay Freeze

School teachers lined the sidewalks at Prince William Parkway and Minnieville Road in Woodbridge Friday to protest a plan to freeze teacher pay rates for the next three years.

Woodbridge, Va. — Prince William County school teachers banded together to protest the lack of pay raises over the next three years.

In cold and rainy weather, about 200 participants at the “Rally for a World Class Education” lined sidewalks at the heavily traveled intersection of Prince William Parkway and Minnieville Road holding signs stating “no teacher left behind” and “support Prince William teachers.”
