The Greater Manassas Christmas Parade committee is urging more civic groups, businesses, and other local organizations to sign up to participate in the 71st annual event.
Of the average 100 groups that march in the parade each year, the committee has about 40 signed up. While the number is on par with previous years, Parade organizer Mark Olsen said it's best to secure your spot in line now.
"Many of those who sign up usually come within the last two weeks before the parade," said Olsen.

Election hopefuls in Manassas Park say more economic development is what is needed to escape the city's crushing $120 million debt.
City Councilman Preston Banks held an open voter forum Wednesday night where 10 candidates seeking seats on the Governing Body shared their vision of a bright future for the two-square-mile city. New government facilities to include a community center -- where residents gathered for the forum Wednesday- with indoor swimming pool, new fire and police stations, and new school buildings all built over the past 20 years have left the city with a pile of debt.
Multiple candidates called for refinancing the debt and renegotiating contracts to free up additional funds in the city's annual $78 million budget. There were also promises from two mayoral candidates -- incumbent Frank Jones and Jeanette Rishell -- not to raise property taxes.

Realtors got an education Thursday about Prince William County's Rapid Rehousing program.
The program's goal is to find landlords with properties for rent and to move homeless families into them. The training provided at the county's first Landlord Summit comes as nearly 40 homeless people will be forced off land behind Bungalow Alehouse in Woodbridge following a no trespassing order issued by the landowner, a Prince William County spokesman said last month.
Four hundred homeless people living in Prince William County were noted in an annual count on January 28. That number is down about 2% from 2015. Many are retail workers, nursing home staff, bank, tellers, bus drivers, veterans, suffering mental illness, married and divorced.

Suspicious Clown Threats
Between Sept. 30 and Oct. 5, 2016, Manassas City Police received multiple reports from citizens of unknown subjects dressed as clowns acting suspiciously both online and near area schools. The reports have been broad and very similar in nature to those made throughout the Northern Virginia region and areas along the east coast. Manassas City Police has not discovered any evidence to suggest a plausible threat to the public, and officers will continue to respond to all reports and follow all credible leads that indicate illegal activity or a potential danger to citizens.
