Local leaders are taking a stand against a plan to hand over to Metro money for allocated for traffic and transit projects in the region to ease congestion and add capacity. 

Northern Virginia Transportation Authority Chairman Marty Nohe on Tuesday said Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s budget would see some $50 million in new taxes to be raised, funds that would be given to NVTA — the Northern Virginia taxing authority that identifies which traffic and transit projects are in need of funding and then awards the funds.

From Prince William police: 

Assault & Battery on Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) – On January 7 at 10:39PM, officers responded to the Sheetz located at 11774 Sudley Manor Dr in Manassas (20109) to investigate a disorderly person. Several callers reported to police that an unknown man was inside the store assaulting citizens and ransacking the business. When officers arrived and made contact with the suspect inside of the store, they determined that the man was under the influence of a narcotic. When officers attempted to detain the accused, he resisted and a struggle ensued. Officers deployed a TASER and the accused was eventually subdued and detained with the assistance of multiple officers. The accused was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries then taken to the Adult Detention Center. Following the investigation, the accused, identified as Stewart Lewis SKINNER, was charged.

RICHMOND – A month after the fury over what many drivers considered excessive tolls on Interstate 66, Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne defended the tolls, saying they are necessary for increasing the flow of traffic on the highway in Northern Virginia.

The tolls, which vary based on demand and amount of traffic, have reached as high as $44 for a 10-mile drive since they were implemented on Dec. 4.

Manassas police on Monday night swore in seven new police officers.

The new officers come as the city’s police department in recent months has been short on manpower, forcing existing officers and staff to put in extra hours to meet demand.

ARLINGTON — A state official warns any changes to toll collection on Interstate 66 inside the Capital Beltway could force changes to the highway improvement project taking place outside the ring road.

As part of the $3.5 billion effort to add E-ZPass toll lanes to I-66 between Gainesville in Prince William County and the Captial Beltway, the consortium building the lanes, I-66 Mobility Partners, gave $579 million in free money to the state to be used for transportation improvements.
