Things just got kicked up a notch as a tropical storm warning is now in effect for the Potomac Communities. It replaces the tropical storm watch issued Thursday afternoon.

The Chapter meets the third Thursday each month from 11:30am to 1:00pm at Stratford University, 14349 Gideon Drive. Like many others, I cautiously welcomed the news that Libyan rebels had finally entered Tripoli, the Libyan capital this week. Libyan strongman Muammar al Qaddafi and his forces appear to be defeated and after successful revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, an unclear result in Yemen and a failed one in Bahrain, Libya is poised to become the next nation to undergo a major political transformation that we have come to know as the “Arab Spring.”
The toppling of Qaddafi is particularly noteworthy. Qaddafi was a predecessor of bin Laden’s. He established ties to terrorist organizations early in his 42-year reign. He bankrolled groups as diverse as the Palestinian Liberation Organization, its terror off-shoot Abu Nidal, Germany’s Red Army Faction, Italy’s Red Brigades, and the Irish Republican Army.
The storm is expected to become a Category 4 storm that will churn it up seaboard and is expected to impact the Mid-Atlantic coast late Saturday into Sunday morning, bringing high winds to heavy rains to the coast.
For the Potomac Communities, well, the storm’s forecasted effects on us aren’t as clear.
The East Coast was rocked again overnight by an earthquake from Virginia.
The 4.5 magnitude quake was once again centered near where Tuesday’s large 5.8 quake originated in Mineral, Va., just 32 miles southwest of Fredericksburg, according to the USGS.

The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed a 4.2 aftershock centered near Mineral, Va. at 8:05 p.m.

Prince William County, Va. — The American Wartime Museum slated to be built in Dale City will host an open house this weekend.
Museum officials have invited residents to Nokesville in western Prince William County to see demonstrations of tanks and flame throwers, and to learn more about a planned museum that aims to recreate the wartime experience for the public.
Three hundred sixty five structure fires have caused over $9 million in loss and damages at colleges since 2000 in Virginia. If you’re staying in student housing, are you willing to bet your life that you are automatically safe from fire? Be smart; change the batteries in your smoke detectors when you get there.
Many student houses and dorms at your school might not have adequate automatic sprinklers or fire alarm systems. Regularly testing fire and smoke detectors is the first smart action you can take at any new location you move to.
