Children between the ages of five and 17 are making good use of open gym. During the week, gym time is made available to members to play basketball and keep their skills sharp for the Fall League and there is already a buzz in the air about the upcoming season.

Coach Michael Futrell along with his wife, Dr. Bernadine Futrell, are the founders and directors of the Make The Future Basketball camp held Aug. 27 – 31 at the General Heiser Boys and Girls Club in Dumfries.

The organization is in its third year of operation and serves many of Boys and Girls Club members here at the General Heiser Branch, and also the other Boys and Girls Club branches in Northern Virginia.

The basketball league is one of the clubs biggest programs, averaging about 200 children per season. The children play in one of five different age divisions on teams that are picked with the use of a skills evaluation clinic that is held on the first practice of the season.

Volleyball is a fast-growing program that has seen its participation nearly double over the last year. Girls between the ages of 10 and 17 play in one of two age divisions while they learn the fundamentals of the game, or sharpen their skills for their high school seasons.

With a four-way tie for second place in the 13 to 17-year-old division, three great games were played last night.

The Grizzlies secured their spot with a victory over the first place Nuggets. The team fought hard and picked up some momentum and is now heading into their first playoff game this Monday. There they will try to advance to the championship as the number two seed in the playoff bracket.
