Contract workers with the state will soon have to submit their employees to an immigration check.

A bill sponsored by Virginia State Senator George Barker (D-39) and Del. Richard Anderson (R-51) was signed into law this week, requiring all contractors working for the state to submit to an E-Verify check through the Department of Homeland Security beginning Dec. 1, 2013.

Florida’s high speed rail loss will not be Virginia’s gain.

Florida rejected $2.4 billion in federal money to build a high speed rail line between Orlando and Tampa. Prior to being awarded the money, Virginia under Gov. Timothy M. Kaine applied for $1.8 billion in available federal money to fund the creation of a high speed rail corridor between Richmond and Washington.

The Potomac Health Foundation has announced its kickoff event from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hylton Education Center at Sentara Potomac Hospital in Wooddbridge.

Independent from the hospital it shares its name with, the newly-founded organization has invited members of non-profit organizations to the event to learn how they can apply for grant funding. Some public sector companies will also be considered for grant funding.
