Depression, a serious mental health condition that can strike at any age, is a medical condition that interferes with daily life and normal functioning. Unfortunately, many people assume depression is just part of aging. This is not true.

Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center announced today there is new hope for men who suffer from lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) as a result of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate.

The new treatment, called Aquablation® therapy, is performed by the AQUABEAM System which uses a robot-controlled waterjet to remove the enlarged prostate tissue. It is the only FDA-cleared minimally invasive treatment for BPH that combines real-time, multi-dimensional imaging with surgical robotics and a heat-free waterjet for targeted, precise and safe removal of prostate tissue, with a reduced risk of sexual side effects.

Haymarket man killed when ATV overturns

From Prince William police:

Fatal Crash Investigation – On May 26, 2018 at 4:57PM, investigators from the Crash Investigation Unit responded to the 16900 block of Stormy Dr in Haymarket (20169) to investigate a crash involving an ATV. The investigation revealed that the victim was riding a 2013 Kawasaki 750 CC eastbound on Stormy Dr when he lost control causing the ATV to overturn. The victim was transported to an area hospital where he died as a result of his injuries a short time later. The victim was not wearing a helmet. Speed is being investigated as a factor in the crash. The investigation continues.

Bus driver involved in fatal Haymarket crash surrenders to police

From Prince William police:

Fatal Crash Investigation *ARREST – On May 24, investigators from the Crash Investigation Unit obtained an arrest warrant against the driver of the school bus involved in the fatal crash that occurred in the area of Old Carolina Rd and Piedmont Vista Dr in Haymarket on May 23. Based on the investigation, and after consultation with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, the driver of the school bus, identified as Sheli Cheru PAUGH, was determined to be at fault in the crash which resulted in the death of a 53-year-old man. The accused turned herself into police on May 25 without incident.

Many families have plans to travel, but for those of us staying in good old Virginia this summer, we must find good ways of making our summer a fun one. While Northern Virginia has plenty of attractions to visit, sometimes going out to a local park is an easier, more relaxing way to spend some nice summer days. Warm weather is finally here, and it brings with it the grand opening of the Signal Bay Waterpark!

Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines^®-Stroke Silver Plus and Target: Stroke^SM Elite Honor Roll Quality Achievement Awards. The awards recognize the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center earned the awards by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients should also receive education on managing their health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.

The current VA Choice Program is one of those opportunities. With over two million veterans using the Choice Program to schedule over 39 million essential appointments, it is in danger of running out of funding by the end of the month. Local impact data is not yet available for Manassas; however, the preliminary numbers indicate another record year for tourism spending as consumers seek out more experiential opportunities.
