WOODBRIDGE -- Virginia is one of the states that has yet to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, but a group in Prince William County is trying to change that.
It kicked off their effort on Womenâs Equality Day, Sunda, Aug. 26, at the Ferlazzo Building in Woodbridge where they watched Iron Jawed Angels and shared the microphone with ERA champ and television star Alyssa Milano.
âI think itâs important to realize how far weâve come,â Milano said, referring back to the movie which featured the plight of the original Suffragists led by Alice Paul. âI promise you I am on your side,â she said.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY -- U.S. officials were taken by surprise when China announced this year that it will no longer accept most plastics for recycling.
Prince William County and Manassas residents were equally confounded.
âAfter starting my own family and having kids, my concern for recycling has grown. If China no longer takes and processes our plastic, Iâm not sure where it will all go, and Iâm concerned it will end up in the water,â Kim Gutman, a Manassas resident, said over Facebook.

If you went to college, thereâs a good chance youâre among the more than 70 percent of graduates with student loans to repay.
While those loans allowed you to achieve educational goals, they could affect your ability to achieve another part of the American dream â buying a home.
But with careful planning and proper guidance, you can qualify for a mortgage.
To assess each specific situation, Victoria King of The Fauquier Bank recommends the first stop be with a mortgage loan officer. Understanding your financial profile â and how to improve it, if necessary â is the best place to start.
âWhen you want to buy a home, the first thing to do is talk to a loan officer, even before you talk to a real estate agent, so they can guide you in the home buying process,â she says.
Donât worry; youâre not alone in this. About 45 million Americans have student debt. The average borrower owes almost $40,000, according to Student Loan Hero. Many owe even more, according to the National Association of Realtors. And itâs a particular problem for first-time homebuyers.
King recommends these steps:
Build Credit: Take small steps that can have a big pay-off. For instance, if you canât get a major credit card, take out a smaller card, make purchases and pay them off in full. By practicing good habits, youâll build your credit.
Improve Your Score: Once youâve got a credit history, talk with a lender, who will begin by checking your credit score. The higher the score, the better the interest rate you can qualify for.
If you need to improve your credit score, there are several options, such as making payments on time, and keeping the balance below 50 percent of the credit limit. If your score still isnât where it needs to be, King can help improve it through a ârapid rescoreâ process.
âI can absolutely help somebody with their credit score if they need it,â she explains. The process can take time, for both the lender and the customer, but it can be worth it. âItâs something I take the time to do in order to help my clients,â she says.
Reduce Monthly Payments: Keep your student loan payment â as well as all expenses â low in order to reduce the amount you have to pay each month.
âFor qualifying purposes with a mortgage,â she says, âyou want to get that payment down as low as possible.â

In February of this year, the United States Tennis Association Mid-Atlantic (USTA MAS) announced it will locate its new headquarters and state-of-the-art tennis facility in Innovation Park, in Prince William County. The Board of County Supervisors approved an agreement between USTA MAS and the Industrial Development Authority (IDA) of Prince William County and agreed to assign a $100,000 Economic Development Opportunity Fund (EDOF) grant as an incentive for the project, which is due to be completed by 2021.
The USTA Mid-Atlantic Section, one of 17 sections of the United States Tennis Association, is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization serving more than 33,000 members in the D.C. metro area. According to the USTA MAS, tennis players of all ages and skill levels are involved in leagues, tournaments and programs sanctioned by the section. Over 300,000 visitors are anticipated to visit the new USTA facility per year.
Will the new USTA MAS facility affect local centers?
A variety of sport centers stand to be impacted by the new facility, but according to two local center representatives, the move will be a benefit to tennis players.
