As more than 91,000 students bring excitement and a curiosity for learning into our school hallways and classrooms for the 2019-20 school year, we have much to celebrate in Prince William County Schools.

I am very pleased to share that, with the support of the School Board and Board of County Supervisors, we are implementing the best budget in a decade. Our 2019-20 budget addresses the following priorities: employee pay, special education, mental health, career, and technical education, sustaining class size reductions, and Pre-K education.

NORTH STAFFORD — A new head start center in North Stafford opened this week with little fanfare.

“There wasn’t a letter sent out to parents about it being opened. There wasn’t anything on Facebook. There was something on Twitter, but I don’t tweet,” one parent told the Stafford County School Board during its Tuesday night meeting.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ford’s Theatre announced that Amanda Cline was selected to attend the Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation Civil War Washington summer teacher institute.

Cline is a fourth-grade Virginia Studies and Language Arts teacher at Richard C. Haydon Elementary School in Manassas.

STAFFORD — The Stafford County School Board is looking into further energy performance contracting in order to optimize existing facilities, seeking to conserve energy and save money.

Appearing as an information item at the June 25 meeting, the Board reviewed a construction contract with Trane Energy Services to move ahead with energy conservation plans.

STAFFORD — The Stafford County School Board is considering new revisions to its existing nondiscrimination policy that are raising unanswered questions.

One of the biggest proposed changes is the inclusion of protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity; however, many questions still remain as to how these anti-discrimination protections will be carried out by the county and how the policy will affect students and teachers directly.
