As we prepare to celebrate our 45th Birthday, Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center is taking a look back at the history which shaped the facility into what it is today.
While it’s hard to imagine now, at one point the hospital campus was comprised of open fields. And, before 1972, if residents had a medical emergency they had to travel either to Fredericksburg or Alexandria for care; for many, Manassas wasn’t even an option! That’s where the idea was born for a hospital on the eastern end of the county.

From Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department:
Woodbridge, VA September 12, 2017 —In September 1938, the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department was officially incorporated. It was two years of hard work for a group of concerned citizens who recognized the need for a Fire Department in the area. Many of them put up personal property and their own money to secure loans to build a building to house the apparatus and start the department. Sometimes they had to “pass the hat” to pay electric and other bills monthly.

As transportation officials search for a solution for Route 28 congestion, The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority’s proposal, dubbed “Alternative 2B,” the most popular idea for relieving local congestion, has generated strong opposition from local preservation and conservation agencies concerned about historical and environmental impacts.
If approved, Alternative 2B would extend Godwin Drive from Sudley Road near the Manassas Mall, between the Lomond neighborhood in Prince William County and residential neighborhoods in Manassas Park, across a new bridge over the Bull Run River connecting to Route 28 in Fairfax County.
