Dumfries, Va. –– The torch that heralds the beginning of Virginia’s Special Olympics Summer Games passed through the Potomac Communities.

Prince William County, Va. –– In a memo released June 1, Prince William County Public School officials said the implementation of the Standard Technical Diploma for graduating high school seniors would be delayed by one year due to recent legislation. PWCS named Virginia General Assembly House Bill 1554 and Senate Bill 810 as the cause of the delay.
In a Virginia Department of Education report, however, it is noted that neither House Bill 1554 or Senate Bill 810 prohibits a school division from making the standard or advanced technical diplomas available to students who entered high school prior to 2012-2013 –– the year Prince William County Schools plans to begin offering them ––as long as the requirements have been met.

Woodbridge, Va. –– A line of severe thunderstorms moved through the Potomac Communities late Thursday night bringing reports of ping pong-ball size hail in Woodbridge.
Much of the area was placed under a severe thunderstorm warning by the National Weather Service shortly after 11 p.m. The slow-moving storms brought heavy rain, high winds and dangerous lightning.
The Quantico Marine Corps Band will kick off their summer concert series at 7 p.m. at the National Museum of the Marine Corps off Jefferson Davis Highway (U.S. 1) in Triangle.
Admission to the show is free and it will take place on the lawn outside of the museum.
Authorities on Wednesday learned a 13-year-old girl from Stafford had sex with a 34-year-old man several times, some instances at the man’s home, over the last few months, police say.
During an investigation by the Stafford sheriff’s department, a female deputy learned about a website that the suspect used, assumed the victim’s identity and contacted the suspect.

Town officials Tuesday night approved its fiscal year 2012 operating budget, which is $382,000 higher than the previous year’s budget, according to town documents.
The budget increase comes as property values in the town have declined, but Dumfries Town Manager Kimberley Alexander said the budget is higher this year because officials injected monies into the budget that had been in reserve.
