Add a Turn Lane, Ease Traffic

The Prince William Board of Supervisors ordered transportation officials to authorize “quick take” powers to purchase a 21, 878 square foot tract of land owned by the Lake Ridge Parks and Recreation Association to add a third turn lane on Springwoods Drive at Old Bridge Road.

Currently, drivers waiting to turn left or right onto Old Bridge Road from Springwoods Drive have two lanes –– a dedicated left-turn lane and a multi-directional turn lane that allows drivers to turn left or right. A new dedicated right turn lane will be built on the acquired property, which is aimed at improving traffic flow.

Woodbridge, Va. –– Following concussion-related deaths and students who committed suicide last year, a new policy affecting student athletes in Prince William County will begin in September.

Prince William County Public Schools announced Monday beginning with the 2011-12 school year, all athletes and their parents or guardians will be required to attend a concussion education session before being allowed to participate in sports try-outs.

Feds Approve Prince William Redistricting

The plan, which transformed the Dumfries Magisterial District to the Potomac District, was passed by the county’s Board of Supervisors in April. Afterward, it was forwarded by law to the U.S. Department of Justice for final approval.

“The approval of the County’s redistricting plan is the culmination of a process that involved the entire community. The Board heard input from the Human Rights Commission, the NAACP, various community groups and many individuals, said Prince William Board Chairman Corey A. Stewart. “Clearly this Board worked diligently to make certain we had district lines that were fair and equitable to the demographics and population of Prince William County, and the Department of Justice agreed.”

HOV Violators Targeted

Virginia State Police along with other agencies are cracking down on those who violate the HOV laws as part of a stepped up enforcement effort, Capital HOV Awareness Day.

Police will be out in force during both the morning and evening rush hours driving the length of the lanes as well as sitting along the highway trying to spot violators, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

P-Nats, Pelican’s Match Rained Out

Woodbridge, Va. –– A torrential downpour flooded the field at Pfitzner Stadium on Sunday night and caused the postponement of Monday night’s game between the Potomac Nationals and Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

The two clubs will make the ballgame as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday, beginning at 6 p.m.

P-Nats Win Fourth in a Row

Woodbridge, Va. –– The P-Nats dropped the Salem Red Sox 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Pfitzner Stadium to complete the three-game sweep and win four in a row.

Potomac scored one run per inning from the third through the sixth, and outfielder J.R. Higley led the offensive effort. But, it was Destin Hood the put the P-Nats on the board first.

But as showers cleared, from a soggy tent Saturday afternoon at the Quantico Corporate Center in North Stafford, that county’s top elected official announced he is seeking a promotion. Mark Dudenhefer wants to be the next member of Virginia’s House of Delegates in the 2nd District, filling a seat that was shifted this spring to the Potomac Communities from Southwest Virginia during the decennial redistricting process.

Serving on Stafford’s Board of Supervisors since 2006 and its chairman since 2010, the Republican noted he helped to pass the county’s first comprehensive development plan in the past 22-years and brought civility back to a Board once rife with arguments between Board members.

P-Nats Turn it Around in the Fourth Inning

Woodbridge, Va. –– The P-Nats walked off with a 9-8 over the Salem Red Sox on Friday night at Pfitzner Stadium.

Potomac led off the bottom of the ninth inning with back-to-back bunt singles by Eury Perez and Jeff Kobernus, setting the table for Destin Hood. The P-Nats number three hitting saw consecutive curveballs and whiffed on both.
