Lorton, Va. — The Lorton Workhouse Arts Center is growing and some special guests will be able to find out how big the popular arts outpost will become.
An event on Saturday, Sept. 10 open to members of the Occoquan River Communities, will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. where they’ll be able to learn about the center’s expansion.

North Stafford, Va. — The on again – off again project to redevelop Aquia Towne Center is progressing with several new businesses signed up to lease space at the mixed-use shopping center.
New restaurants including Bungalow Ale House, Travinia Italian Kitchen, as well as other businesses like Gold’s Gym, a new Regal Cinemas and a child development center called The Learning Experience have all signed leases to open in the center.
Quantico, Va. –– On the same day that Americans awoke to the news that this August was the bloodiest month ever in our almost 10-year-long war in Afghanistan, the Marine Corps University at Quantico hosted a symposium on the coming transition in that war-torn land. A total of 66 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines have made the ultimate sacrifice so far this month, surpassing the previous high of 65 in July 2010.
Dumfries, Va. –– A house on Va. 234 near at the south entrance to Montclair went up in flames Monday night.
Dumfries-Triangle Volunteer Fire Department crews were called to 14208 Dumfries Road about 8 p.m. The house was fully involved in flames when crews arrived.

Despite the gates to Government Island being closed and locked, there were dozens of people along Aquia Creek, on the foot-bridges and on the island itself in North Stafford on Sunday afternoon taking advantage of the pleasant post-hurricane weather.
Hurricane Irene brought a soaking rain, downed trees and power outages to the Potomac Communities.
Julie Bohn lives along the Occoquan River at the town that shares the same name. Though two tree limbs fell into her yard due to high winds during the height of the storm, she was happy things did not get as bad as they could have.
Update 11 a.m.
Stafford will open its landfill on Eskimo Hill Road until 3 p.m. today so residents can haul away any debris and other refuse materials.
North Stafford, Va. — They said the hurricane was over hyped, that it didn’t live up to its excitement, so they decided to get out the house.
Mainstreet Grill and Bar on Va. 610 in North Stafford was one of the few places busy Saturday night as Hurricane Irene rolled through the Potomac Communities.
