Fire officials throughout the region have asked residents to “leave the fireworks to the professionals.”
That’s the message from area fire chiefs this year as they work to call attention to the dangers of illegal fireworks. Officials from Prince William County, and from other jurisdictions in the Washington area, on Thursday converged on a public safety training ground in Maryland to demonstrate how dangerous a mishandled firework can be.
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Charges have been filed in an animal slashing case in Fairfax County.
Police said a 17-year-old male slashed barnyard animals on May 26 and on April 26. The teen, whose name was not released due to his juvenile status, faces four counts of maiming animals, three counts of cruelty to animals, and two counts of unlawful entry.
FALMOUTH, Va. — Two new sections of the Belmont-Ferry Farm Trail were opened Saturday. A ribbon cutting was held, as was family activities.

TRIANGLE, Va. — A man and woman from Fredericksburg got into a fight at Locust Shade Park near Triangle. Another man got hit in the head with a stick while trying to break it up.
The argument started just after 5 p.m. Thursday between a 37-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman. Police said both knew each other and, when the argument escalated, a friend of the woman – a 34-year-old man from Stafford — stepped in to help but was hit with a stick.

More passenger trains bound for the Potomac Communities will experience delays today.
Virginia Railway Express told passengers this afternoon excessive heat will spark about delays on the system’s Fredericksburg line, which is owned by freight railroad CSX.
STAFFORD COUNTY, Va — Officials will cut the ribbon on two new sections of the Belmont-Ferry Farm Trail on Saturday.
Phases three and five of the six-section trail will open tomorrow. The trail will eventually link Historic Falmouth with Ferry Farm – George Washington’s boyhood home on the Rappahannock River. It’s being built in sections and, when finished, will link to other areas like Saint Claire Brooks Park, as well as other areas across the river in Fredericksburg, forming the “Heritage Loop.”
DUMFRIES, Va. — Summer camp is in full swing at the Boys and Girls Clubs in the Potomac Communities.
Boys and Girls clubs in Dale City, Dumfries, and Manassas, have welcomed 500 registered teens to the clubs for the annual “Send a Kid to Camp” summer event. Touted as an affordable quality alternative to other summer camps, the clubs offer basketball and volleyball leagues in the evening, and new a teen, and sports camp programs for those ages 5 to 17-years-old.
