Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews have nearly 900 pieces of equipment ready to deploy in the 14-county Fredericksburg District as soon as snow begins to fall this afternoon.

Yesterday, VDOT crews pre-treated main roads with salt brine to prevent ice and snow from bonding with the pavement. Crews treated Interstate 95, primary roads and key secondary roads throughout the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula.

Snow is headed our way, and this storm is shaping up to bring us the most significant winter precipitation this season. After some near misses, and after portions of the northeast has seen as much as seven feet of snow, snow lovers in our area will take delight in a forecast that calls for accumulations of more than six inches.

We could see our first bout of significant winter weather starting Monday night.

A winter storm watch goes into effect Monday night and lasts until Tuesday morning for the region.

A total of 14 people were evacuated from nearby apartments in Downtown Manassas near the scene of the partial building collapse on Battle Street.

City spookeswoman Patty Prince said the evacuation was precautionary and that no one was hurt when a portion of a brick building gave way in the face of high winds. No one was injured.
