Education Secretary Arne Duncan recently proposed more centralized control and standardized testing in return for more Federal funding (WSJ, Jan 12, 2015).
Money with mandates is a false deal for local education. Further centralizing education policy in Washington, D.C. is a counter-productive policy for Prince William County Public Schools.
Now that the 2015 General Assembly Session has concluded, I wanted to take the opportunity to share with you the result of our work.
Despite all the gridlock in Washington these days, we actually get things done in Richmond, on time, responsibly, and in a conservative manner. I hope you agree with me that this is how government should work.
The Prince William County School Board’s abdication of responsibility in this current budget cycle shows their refusal to manage our crucial investment in our students’ future and is an outrage to county families.
Every year, citizens of Prince William County pay almost 60% of their property taxes to educating the children in our county. Educating the next generation is perhaps the most important responsibility of this county that will determine our future. We have an obligation to do the best job possible to prepare students for college or vocational opportunities.

Volunteers are needed on Tuesday mornings from 8am-12 noon at their Manassas Park Rec. Center clinic. Duties include assisting patients with medical forms, answering questions, navigating resources and helping with presentations. Virginia will move ahead with plans to put high occupancy toll lanes on Interstate 66.
But unlike new lanes that opened in December on I-95 between Stafford and Esdall Road in Alexandria, the lanes on I-66 will only be tolled during peak periods.
Maureen Caddigan kicked off her bid to keep her seat as the Prince William County Potomac District Supervisor.
Caddigan held her campaign kick off Thursday night at the Dumfries-Triangle Rescue Squad on Graham Park Road in Dumfries. About 100 people turned out to greet Caddigan, according to a campaign press release.
Motorists traveling through the intersection of Route 1, Route 17 Business and Route 218 (Butler Road) in Stafford County can expect brief overnight travel delays next week due to ongoing construction work to improve the Falmouth intersection.

There are currently four projects being worked on by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) that will help the flow of traffic and improve congestion in the western end of Prince William.
The projects – the Linton Hall Road Interchange, I-66 Widening project, Interstate 66/Route 15 Interchange, and Transform 66 project were all discussed at a recent town hall meeting in Haymarket.
