OWL VFD shaves 70 heads, raises $47,000

OWL VFD, usually known for putting out fires and responding to 911 calls, put their hair on the line to raise funds for research to find new cures for childhood cancer. On March 13, 2015, Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department hosted their 10th Annual St. Baldrick’s Event. With 70 heads shaved, OWL VFD raised more than $47,000 and still counting, exceeding last year’s efforts by at least $7,000 dollars.

“A bald head to give a kid with cancer a chance for a cure? Absolutely! It gets a bit cold, but I am happy to help,” said Firefighter Ernest DeSantis.

Dumfries woman gets $6,000 refund for deck work that never happened

WUSA-TV reports that Manassas-based Deckorators refunded a Dumfries woman a $6,000 deposit she gave the company last year in exchange for work on her deck that never happened. The refund came after the company’s lawyer offered the refund in exchange for the TV station killing their story on the matter, according to WUSA-TV.

Linton Hall Fife & Drum Corps perform at the Smithsonian

On Sunday February 15th 2015, Linton Hall School’s (LHS) Fife & Drum Corps performed as part of Presidential Family Fun Day at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Composed of a tight-knit group of students, the LHS Fife & Drum Corps were the perfect choice for the Smithsonian’s Family Fun Day celebration.

In addition to the many families in attendance, numerous local mascots were on hand; representing the Washington Nationals baseball team were Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Abe Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt. But the real mascot draw was Mr. George Washington himself – the official Mt. Vernon mascot. In a special moment for the audience and students, Mr. Washington personally inspected each Fife & Drum Corps members’s uniform.

Woodbridge woman charged in police officer assault

A woman faces charges after police said she tried to punch an officer during a traffic stop in Woodbridge.

An officer stopped a car about 11 p.m. Saturday in the area of Whittier Loop and Redwing Drive. The driver of the car is being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police.

Secret Garden Café offers ‘gourmet comfort food’ in Occoquan

The Secret Garden Café, located in Occoquan, offers area residents a chance to relax patio-side and enjoy dishes made from scratch on the premises.

The café’s style is ‘gourmet comfort food’ according to Allison Dauksz, the café’s general manager. It was started in April 2013 by a husband and wife team that have since sold the establishment.

SERVE to celebrate 40 years at dinner dance this Friday

The Northern Virginia Family Service, a nonprofit human services group in Northern Virginia, will be hosting a dinner dance in Manassas this Friday, to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of their SERVE program.

The SERVE program has provided necessities for Manassas and western Prince William County residents throughout the 40 years of the program. They offer “a safe place to sleep, their next meal, or perhaps a warm winter jacket,” according to a release.

Free rides offered on St. Patrick’s Day

Several area organizations, including the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP), have announced free ride offers for those planning to party on St. Patrick’s Day.

WRAP has launched a SoberRide program for St. Patrick’s Day this year, which will allow area residents to access a free and safe ride home from 4 p.m. on Tuesday, to 4 a.m. on Wednesday.

Porta, former Occoquan mayor, runs for supervisor seat

Earnie Porta, a financial executive and former mayor of Occoquan, has announced his candidacy for the Prince William County Board of Supervisors.

Porta plans to run for the Occoquan seat, currently held by Supervisor Michael May. May plans to run for the Prince William Commonwealth Attorney, and will be vacating his board seat.
