Work on widening U.S. 1 between Mary’s Way and the Occoquan River just kicked into Phase II.

Crews have focused their attention on the area between Route 123 and Annapolis Way, where many buildings have been boarded up or already razed — including an old Taco Bell restaurant and motel — to make way for the wider interchange at Routes 1 and 123.

After all the holiday hoopla is complete, give your Christmas tree, wreath and other cut greenery a fitting final resting place. Simply remove all ornaments, decorations, tinsel, nails and the tree stand and take the greenery to one of locations listed below to be recycled or repurposed.

John Allen Surin Sr. 3/6/1967 – 12/8/2015 – 48 years of age Navy Veteran of Port Saint Lucie, Florida.

Survived by his son John Allen Surin Jr. His daughter Brittney, two grandchildren Joanna and Landon.Parents Joan & Paul Surin of Ft. Pierce, Fl. Four brothers Michael Surin (Kathleen); David Surin; Stephen Surin; Joseph Surin (Casondra). His Aunt Mary Ann Petricca and Aunt and Uncle Ronald & Phyllis Ziobroski. Several Nieces, nephews and cousins. Dorothy Villa devoted companion for the past several years. John was a graduate of Draper High School where he was involved with the marching band and several sports.

A family that lived in a refugee camp before coming to the U.S. will have a new home in North Stafford.

The Habonimana family will move into a new home at 3 Aquia Avenue on Sunday. Originally from Tanzania, mom, dad, and their five children aged 16, 14, 10, 6, and 18 months, will live in the home made possible by Habitat for Humanity Fredericksburg.

Should Godwin Drive be linked with Interstate 66?  That’s the question a new $2.5 million study will examine.

Transportation planners from Prince William County and Manassas City will study the “Flat Branch” corridor between where Godwin Drive intersects with Sudley Road just outside Manassas, near Novant Prince William Medical Center.

Manassas City Police Detective David Abbott was a 16-year ice hockey coach with the Potomac Patriots, a youth team that plays at the Prince William Ice Center in Dale City.

Abbott, a Manassas officer since 2001, turned a gun on himself Tuesday morning and killed himself after police officers came to his home to serve him with a search warrant. Police said Abbott was charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a minor, and that he had inappropriate relationships with two teenage boys.
