On May 26, the Fredericksburg City Council held a public hearing to discuss proposed revisions to their budget for the fiscal year 2021.
The revised budget total is down 7.5% from the March 10 recommended budget, coming in at $95.7 million. This is also a 5.9% decrease compared to the 2020 fiscal year.
Nancy B. Weaver, a retiring second-grade teacher at T. Clay Wood Elementary School, has had a love of reading since she was a young girl, but she never imagined she would have a library named in her honor.
“I have always loved to read. I have fond memories of my mother reading to me when I was too young to read by myself, and I loved hearing the stories she read to my sister and me,” Weaver said.
Peggy Joyce (Jones) Purnell, 82, of Woodbridge, VA, passed away unexpectedly on May 23, 2020, in her home. She was born to the late James D. and Evelyn R. Jones on December 2, 1937, in Arlington, VA, and lived in Upperville, VA, and Selma, NC, until the family moved to Occoquan in the mid-1940s. In 1950, they moved to Easy Street in Woodbridge. In 1952, the family settled into their newly built home on F Street, where she lived until her marriage.
In the 6th grade, while both attended Occoquan Elementary School, Peggy met Thomas, who would on August 1, 1959, become her husband. In 1956, she graduated from Gar-Field High School and immediately started working for the Federal Government at Ft. Belvoir, VA, as a Secretary. In 1961, after her only child was born, Peggy “retired” from her Federal Government job to become a full-time homemaker. Her entire life’s focus was on caring for her family. In her role as Mom, she chaperoned field trips, hosted play dates and sleepovers, and even went camping with the Girl Scouts, despite an overwhelming fear of snakes. As Poppa, Grandma, and Granny, she never missed an opportunity to cheer at school events, ballet recitals, dirt bike races, and football and baseball games.

Jade Noelle Brooks was born on April 10, 1993 and passed away on May 29, 2020. Jade was a resident of Bristow, Virginia. She attended Brentsville High School Class of 2011 and attended Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Marian Lois Krauss, was born April 19,1928 in Grygla, a small farming community in northern Minnesota. Her parents Winnie Holbrook and Harold Bush were from two of five original settler families in the area in the early 1900’s. After High School, Marian married her to be husband of many years, Wade H. Krauss. After living with Wade’s parents in Louisville Kentucky a short time the family moved to San Diego, California where she spent the rest of her life.
Marian was a lifelong voracious reader. Her interests were eclectic and she loved to talk about her reading with friends and family. The library was visited often. She was a wonderful quilter and seamstress. Her sewing group brought her great joy for many years. She loved to garden and to be outdoors, often with her “walking group”. She practiced Tai Chi and yoga regularly until the years caught up to her. She was a lover of theatre and the arts.

The presentation was held in the Prince William County Sheriff’s Office Conference Room with Hill awarding the prizes to the students on Thursday, May 21, 2020. James Bocopani, Abigail Houchin, and Chloe Martin were awarded the beneficial prize.
Carol Bevins 77 of Dumfries passed away peacefully on May 22 at home. Born to the late Peter and Helena (nee Corley) Corradi on November 26th 1942 in Portsmouth New Hampshire. Carol was a nurse for 50 years specializing in dialysis for 30 years. Carol was an avid solitaire player and reader. She loved making jellies candies and pickles. She was a devote catholic and a parishioner of St Francis of Assisi in Dumfries for 15 years. She doted on her grandchildren and loved being with family. Carol was predeceased in death by her parents as well as her sister Patricia and brother Peter. Carol is survived by her loving children Kelly wife of William Jakubowicz of Fort Belvior, Son Keith Bevins husband to Gary Berkhimer of Manasses. Grandchildren Natalie, Daniel and Morgan. A celebration of Carols life will be held at a later date at St Francis of Assisi in Dumfries with burial of cremains at st Mary Cemetery.
