Stafford now has a warehouse to combat coronavirus, needs more supplies

With supplies running short and localities searching for any amidst the coronavirus outbreak, Stafford County is working to provide these supplies to their community, with the help of volunteers and donors.

Stafford County has set up a warehouse and supply chain to address this supply shortage. Working with members of Stafford Fire and Rescue, Stafford’s volunteer Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and Team Rubicon, a veterans disaster relief organization, The county will be accepting public donations between Monday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

With fewer volunteers on hand to take care of animals during the spread of the coronavirus, an effort is underway to clear the shelters.

Between Thursday, March 26 and Wednesday, April 1, the BISSELL Pet Foundation will help foot the bill to lower adoption fees for their shelter animals at the Fredericksburg SPCA, located at 10819 Courthouse Road.

Fredericksburg reports first case of coronavirus

Fredericksburg has reported its first confirmed case of coronavirus.

It brings the total number of cases in the Rappahannock Area Health District to 13. There are nine cases reported on Stafford County and three in Spotsylvania County.

Superintendent Scott Kizner and School Board Chair Holly Hazard address the county for the first time since Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam on March 23 ordered schools closed for the remainder of the academic year.

Sitting six feet apart in an empty board chamber, Superintendent Scott Kizner and School Board Chair Holly Hazard broadcasted to a thousand concerned parents, students, staff, and community members viewing from a distance, behind the safety of their screens, about the impacts of the coronavirus on the Stafford County Public School System.

Cleaning wipes, flushable wipes, paper towels, and rags are being found in sanitary sewers at an alarming rate, area officials tell Potomac Local News.

People are flushing down the toilet things like baby cleaning wipes, paper towels, tissues, dental floss, and tampons, and other sanitary products.

Food pantries across the region work to fill need during coronavirus pandemic

Prince William County has donated $30,000 to area food pantries in the wake of the spreading coronavirus.

The donation is in an effort to ensure the most vulnerable families in the community have access to food. Several food banks have seen a decline in donations in the wake of the pandemic.

Manassas delays meals tax collection, city budget to be affected

The Manassas City Council unanimously voted to give local restaurants a break.

In a bipartisan decision at a special meeting Monday night, leaders opted to extend the deadline for city eateries to pay their monthly meals taxes. Originally due this month on March 20, restaurants now have until June 20 to pay their meals taxes accumulated for the months of March, April, and May.

Stafford pleads for N95 protective masks donations

If you can donate them or make them, Stafford County officials are pleading with the public for N95 protective masks.

Businesses that are not using them are being asked to donate them, and sewists are being asked to make protective masks.

After banner economic year, coronavirus fear grips Manassas budget process

Manassas Mayor Hal Parrish, II called an emergency meeting of the City Council on March 16 to discuss the city budget for fiscal year 2021.

In an eerie and nearly empty city council chamber, Manassas leaders moved ahead with the city’s annual budget process in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

The City Council on Monday, March 16, 2020, chose to advertise a property tax rate of $1.48 per every $100 of the assessed Real Estate property value for its budget for Fiscal Year 2021, which begins July 1.
