The unemployment rate in Manassas has skyrocketed to 13% in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, and long-awaited stimulus money from the Federal Government has yet to arrive.
In January and February, the city’s unemployment rates were 2.8% and 2.5%, respectively, according to the Virginia Employment Commission. The city had just come off a “banner year,” with new businesses opening and existing businesses expanding or relocating to the city.
Gov. Ralph Northam announced on May 2 that Virginia was approved by FEMA to receive three Battelle Critical Care Decontamination Systems which can collectively sanitize 240,000 PPE each day.
The systems are at no cost to Virginia for the first six months of use, and their decontamination services are free to hospitals and healthcare workers.
Manassas Park City residents are the proud owner of a new traffic radar trailer.
The city’s police department purchased $24,000 the trailer and sign combination as a replacement after police had to decommission three trailers due to them becoming obsolete.

Mayor Hal Parrish II announced his retirement at a small gathering at Okras restaurant in Downtown Manassas in February. It came as a surprise to many, as he’s served as mayor since 2008, and has been on the city council since 1993.

The Stafford County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved their $320 million budget for Fiscal Year 2021.
With the Real Estate tax rate of 97 cents per $100 of assessed property value — known as the equalized tax rate that was adopted on April 21 — the main focus of Tuesday’s budget meeting was to identify cuts and reductions to the budget. The equalized rate means property owners won’t see a hike in their Real Estate tax bills.
