A rare form of cancer hasn’t stopped Nicholas Stepaniak from becoming one of the country’s top emergency call takers.

Stephaniak was honored late last month in Texas as the top public-safety communications trainer in the nation. Working from Stafford County’s Public Safety Communications Center, when he takes a call about a house fire, car crash, theft or robbery, the person making that call is probably having one of the worst days of their lives.


Virginia Railway Express officials say there may be some delays on Monday as trains could be forced to move slower through the Marine Corps Base, but they are not anticipating a full-service shut down on the Fredericksburg line like they had Friday.

The area is under a heat advisory today from the National Weather Service today, where were told to expect temperatures that feel like 100 to 105 degrees.

Those triple-digit temperatures are actually the heat index values forecasted today between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. The actual temperatures are forecasted to reach the upper 90s today, the weather service stated. (more…)


Stafford County, Va. – One man faces murder charges in the death of a Stafford County antique store owner.

Stafford County detectives traveled to the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center in Winchester on Tuesday night and served an arrest warrant for 63-year-old Julian Lee “Buzz” Burke, who was already in jail on a first-degree murder charge from an incident that took place in Fauquier County in November 2009, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.
