PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Steel beams from the ill-fated World Trade Center that have been sitting underneath a tarp for the past two years in Prince William County will be moved to Woodbridge to be preserved.

County officials say a public restoration effort to preserve the steel will begin in early July on the Sean T. Connaughton Plaza at the Prince William County Government Center. The effort is expected to cost upward of $75,000, and a company will be selected through an open bid process to complete the work.

A tornado watch is in effect for most of Virginia, including Prince William and Stafford counties, and the Greater Manassas area.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue to develop this afternoon into the overnight hours. In addition to tornadoes, the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy downpours, the National Weather Service states.

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — Water levels are rising at the Historic Port of Falmouth in Stafford County today. Because of that, the park along the Rappahannock River has been closed to the public until further notice.

It comes as another round of drenching rains are expected to fall today. The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for the entire region through this evening.

I think Prince William County / Manassas Boys and Girls Club Regional Director Glenn Vickers said it best at the Steak ‘N Stake awards dinner on Friday night – children in Prince William County and surrounding area will be out of school in in a week and they’re going to need a place to spend their summer.

As the weather gets hotter, for us reporters, that means covering more stories involving accidents, crime, and possibly even some unfortunate incidents involving children. But, as a product of the Boys and Girls Club, I know children who have their minds engaged, those who are involved, those who are active, and children who take an active role in their communities are more likely to have a more rewarding summer and are less likely to appear in unfortunate news stories. While there’s no scientific proof, its common knowledge children who are properly cared for do better.

A Fresh Focus

I have killed many plants in my day.  Once, I even killed a bamboo plant, which is actually quite difficult. Bamboo is probably the only plant that would survive the apocalypse.  My inability to keep plants of any variety alive concerns me, partly because I love homegrown produce and partly because this can’t bode well for motherhood (but that’s neither here nor there).

QUANTICO, Va. – A gloomy day took a favorable turn for those participating in the first Snakehead Fishing Tournament at Marine Corps Base Quantico. Shawn Mahood, a Stafford County resident, says he caught a snakehead that he estimates to be 8 or 9 pounds – and it wasn’t giving up without a fight.

MANASSAS, Va. — Community organizations and business leaders in Prince William County and Manassas are going the extra mile this summer to “Send a Kid to Camp.” For the next 10 days, seven prominent members of the community will embark on a quest to raise $50,000 to help give at-risk youth the opportunity to attend summer camp at one of three Boys and Girls Clubs branches in the area.

With the “10 Days to Summer Camp — Send a Kid to Camp” fundraiser, raising funds for the campaign will be be done easily and electronically using Crowdrise, a web service which allows anyone to go online and make a donation to one of seven teams all playing for same goal — to Send a Kid to Camp.

MANASSAS, Va. — The movers and shakers of Prince William County gathered at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas on Friday night to celebrate the 24th annual Steak and Stake fundraiser and awards dinner for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.

While it was lovely to see the sparkling dresses and dapper tuxes throughout the evening, the most heartfelt moments came from the children who benefit from area clubs.
