Routes 610, 17 & Stafford Courthouse all areas seen as bright spots for development

Stafford residents were clear: they want more high-end retail stores and restaurants in their county.

Stores like Macy’s, Jos A. Bank, L.L. Bean and restaurants like Maggiano’s Little Italy were just some of the names tossed out by residents. Those same residents said they commute to work for too long each weekday on Interstate 95 only to have to drive to places outside the county like Fredericksburg, Woodbridge and Tysons Corner to reach their favorite shopping destinations.

Wendy Maurer running for Rock Hill Supervisor in Stafford

Wendy Maurer planned to file her paperwork on Monday to run for the office of Rock Hill District Supervisor.

A Republican small business owner and member of Stafford’s Economic Development Authority, Maurer has long been active in the Stafford community. She seeks to replace Cord Sterling, who announced he would not seek reelection in November after accepting a new job as a staffer in the U.S. Senate.

Cord Sterling takes D.C. job for John McCain, leaving Stafford Board of Supervisors

After eight years serving on the Stafford County Board of Supervisors, Cord Sterling choked up, sat back in his seat and said something that was clearly difficult to get out.

“I will not be running for reelection for the Board of Supervisors in November,” said Sterling.

Candland’s proposal to be used to craft 2016 budget

The average property tax bill in Prince William County may not increase next year as much as planned.

The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a plan from Gainesville Supervisor Peter Candland that directs County Executive Melissa Peacor to develop a 2016 budget where the average property tax bill increases no more than 1.7%. That number is down from an annual projected 4% tax bill increase approved by the Board of County Supervisors last April. The average tax bill was to increase by at least 4% per year, every year under the old 5-year plan.

Dudenhefer running to reclaim 2nd District seat in Stafford, Woodbridge

Mark Dudenhefer seeks to reclaim his seat in the House of Delegates representing Stafford and Woodbridge.

It will be Dudenehfer’s third time running for the seat, one he held for one term after being elected in 2011. He later lost to Delegate Michael Futrell in 2013.

Should Prince William raise taxes to fill $17.7 million bus budget gap?

Commuter bus service in Prince William County is heading toward a fiscal cliff.

A budget deficit of $17.7 million is looming for OmniRide commuter buses and OmniLink local buses. The Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission or PRTC — the agency that operates the buses — asked Prince William leaders to help make up a budget shortfall that could lead to 1/3 of all PRTC to be slashed, starting in 2018.

Futrell Eyes Senate, Won’t Seek Woodbridge — Stafford House Seat

After one term in the House of Delegates, Michael Futrell will run to replace the retiring Charles Colgan, who is currently Virginia’s longest-serving Senator in Richmond.

A new Democratic candidate that been selected to replace Futrell will make his official announcement in January, said Prince William County Democratic Committee Chairman Harry Wiggins. The unnamed candidate lives in Woodbridge, has been active in the committee, and will soon retire from his job at the Pentagon in Arlington.

McPike Makes Run for Virginia Senate

McPike

Jeremy McPike fell short by just 288 votes in his bid to unseat the long-serving Scott Lingamfelter from the Virginia House of Delegates. There were a total of 22,833 votes cast in the 2013 contest.

McPike said he built a “strong coalition” of voters during that campaign who recognized him as the person who could help bring ethics reform to Richmond, as well as help move Prince William County forward in areas such as transportation and education.
