Born and raised in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, Cookie was the eldest child of Joseph and Rose Nicastro. As a child, she loved attending the then local professional basketball team, the Scranton Miners, games with her father. She was a proud alumna of Dunmore High School.

Professionally, Cookie was a diligent and sharp bookkeeper who worked in the billing departments for several large companies, including Emery Air Freight, Hertz and Cyro.

Walter H. Clausson

Walter Howard Clausson, aka Pop, Walt, Pop Pop, and/or Uncle Howard, was born January 5, 1930 in Beaver Falls, PA, the 9th child of William Allen and Ethel Mae Moon Clausson. The son of a farmer and mechanic, with eight other siblings Walt’s childhood was very humble. He remembered wearing burlap potato sacks for clothing and kicking the snow off the bottom of the bed, that came through the slats of the wall on cold wintry nights on the Pennsylvania farm where they lived. Despite their meager lifestyle, there was lots of love and Pop said he never knew they were poor.

Pop wanted to join the service and fight in WWII with his brothers, but he was too young to enlist. When the Korean War began, Pop was only 17, still too young to enlist, so he falsified his age, and on April 23, 1947, he was sworn into the United States Army. When his mother found out, she was going to report him for being underage, but he told her how well he was doing, and how important it was to him to support the country, and that he was going to church every Sunday. That sold her and she finally agreed. Pop served in the Korean war as a medic and in Tres, Italy. He was proud of his time in service but tortured by memories of the war in his later years.

His time in service brought him to Washington, DC, where he met a fun group of friends, among them, a young, pretty lady named Doris “Eileen” Davis. He was 21 and she was 17, but their attraction was strong and within a few months, they ran off and eloped on January 1, 1952. They started their family very quickly, and the first of their four children, Drenda was born almost a year later, in 1952, Steven in 1954, Wade in 1956 and Laurie in 1962. They bought a house in Woodbridge, Va in 1959, where they lived for 37 years. Walt worked many jobs doing mechanical work, maintenance work and owned a restaurant in Crystal City during the 1970s, called Paul’s Colonial Inn. He worked as the building engineer at Watergate for a few years, before becoming the Chief of Maintenance at the Kennedy Center, from where he retired in 1994, after 20 years of service. In 1996, Walt and Eileen sold their house and bought a motorhome to do some travelling around the country, and became snowbirds in Myrtle Beach, SC where they made many friends and found their beloved Pepe, a small Yorkie, who they often referred to as their 5th child. After retirement, Walt and Eileen bought a small lot at a campground called Four Winds Golf and Campground Resort, where they made many friends and had 25 years of great fun and memories.

Pop was a loving grandfather to 14 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. He had so many friends and was quickly loved soon after meeting strangers and acquaintances, as well as his many, many friends with his kind, gentle generosity, quick wit, and mischievous sense of humor.

He will be dearly missed and is survived by his wife Eileen, of nearly 70 years, and his children Drenda (Alvin), Steven (Cheryl), Wade (Michele) and Laurie, grandchildren Shawn (Adelle), Nicole, Shayne (Marta), Brian (Janene), Lora (Michael), Ashleigh, Zach, Jamie (PJ), Keith, Michael, (Stephany), Christopher (Elizabeth), Ryan and Steven and great grandchildren Alex, Anthony, Jennifer, Pete, Autumn, Grace, Sean, Noah, James, William, Devin, Daisha, Shannon, MJ, Joshua, Hazel, Haileigh, Evelyn, Hadley, Judah and Gavin, his brother Glenn, sister Dolores Ryan, many nieces and nephews and many friends, among them, dear friends Wendell and Betty Laney. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Edwin, Catie, Ruth, Jean, Bob and George and grandchild Stefanie Buckingham.

Friends and family will be received at VFW Post 7916 on April 24th. Please contact the family for details.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude’s Hospital would be appreciated.

Skye Elizabeth Richardson

It was a freezing windy day on January 15, 1994 when a baby girl, Skye Elizabeth Richardson, changed her environment in Woodbridge Virginia. She was born to Lori Tyree Cummings and Ira Richardson. She was reared by her parental grandparents, Hosea and Myrtle Richardson. At the age of twelve she was baptized by the former pastor, Rev. Dr. Frederick S. Jones (deceased) assisted by the present pastor, Rev. Dr. Henry P. During, Jr. She was an active member of the church, singing in the youth choir until high school graduation. She was a ray of light and a joy to everyone she knew.
Her formal education was as typical as most. She attended Star Bethlehem Christian Academy in K-4 and K-5 (valedictorian); River Oaks Elementary School (accelerated program); Godwin Middle School (IBMY Program, received several certificates for perfect attendance and Honor Roll, the White House Presidential Award, The DECA program, and “Saluting Our Stars” at the Hylton Preforming Arts Center); and Gar-Field High School (continued IBMY Program and DECA, and was a member fo the Steppers Dance Team). In 2012 she enrolled in Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. After four years, she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fashion Merchandising.
She was employed as a teacher at the Star Bethlehem Christian Academy and part-time at David’s Bridal. She loved “her” kids. She had a passion for fashion and make-up. As a true fashionista, she excelled in the merging of the two. She enjoyed finding the balance in blending everything from luxury brands to thrift store bargains, and took the pleasure in coordinating all accessories from footwear to make-up to jewelry. She said “You can never learn too much about make-up. Everyone does make-up differently. There are so many different techniques. You don’t get bored because no two faces are the same. There are so many possibilities. You can really do anything- glam, editorial, special effects etc.”
Left to mourn her transition are her mother, Lori Cummings (Eugene); her father, Ira Richardson (Karen); her paternal grandmother, Myrtle Richardson; her maternal grandfather, Shepard Tyree; three sisters: Terra McGhee and KalaRose and Ari Jean Richardson; two brothers: Tyree Cummings and Chauncey Richardson; aunts: Jimmie Gunter and Cathy Wester; and uncle, Earl Kelly. She had many special life long friends to include Autumn Rose, Tia Milton and Cherell McManus (3 peas in a pod); a significant friend Jamal Griffin; god sisters: Natisha Hamrick, Tiffany Miller and Chelsea Dennis; and one god brother David Dennis, Jr. She also leaves a host of family members and many beloved friends.

Nancy Carol Tierney

Nancy Carol Tierney was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She passed away on March 31, 2021 at the age of 73 after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by family who will honor her by living their lives to the fullest.

On May 11, 1947, Kenneth and Allene Hauck received a Mother’s Day blessing when Nancy was born. Nancy grew up in Arlington and Springfield, VA before moving to Virginia Beach. A wildly intelligent and dedicated student, she graduated near the top of her class from Robert E. Lee High School (now John R. Lewis High School) in Springfield, VA and went on to obtain a B.A. in History from the College of William & Mary where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. After teaching in the Virginia Beach public school system and working with her father at the American Truckers Association, she worked as a legal assistant at the international law firm Holland & Knight for over 30 years before retiring in 2015.

Nancy met her future husband, Jim Tierney, in Virginia Beach, VA. After some adventures in beach living, Nancy and Jim quickly fell in love and were married in Elizabeth City, NC on December 27, 1973. They moved to Lake Ridge, VA where they raised five (wonderful) children together: James, Jr., Erin, Shawn, Patrick and Shannon. Nancy also loved her daughter-in-law, Jacqueline (Shawn’s wife), and adored her grandchildren: Kyle, Connor, Garrett, Kellen, Braden, Landon, Madeline, Ava and Zeke.

Nancy loved to help. Whether it was rescuing animals (or her kids or their friends) or reading to children in underfunded schools, she was always willing to lend a helping hand. She also was an avid sports fan, and especially loved watching her children’s and grandchildren’s soccer games. She rooted hard for the Redskins (Washington Football Team), Caps, and Nats, and also Duke Basketball (much to the chagrin of her family), and loved talking sports with anyone who would listen
or to the TV otherwise! She was incredibly close to her family, especially her aunt Hazel, uncle Cliff, and cousins Sandy and Brenda, her sister Terri, and her entire North Carolina family, Ann, Rod, Gail, Kim and Kara, Norman, Betty, Steve, Tamra, Don, John, Charles, and all of the others, and their respective spouses and children. She loved traveling to the Outer Banks, NC, Marco Island, FL and Salisbury, NC to visit her family.

She is deeply loved by her family, colleagues, and friends, and nearly everyone who she came into contact with, including people at the local pharmacy, grocery stores, restaurants, hair salons, and even the manager at her go-to restaurant, Outback. She is survived by her husband, children, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, and her extended family and friends, who will all dearly miss her.

In lieu of flowers or other memorials, the family will be establishing a fund in her name with a to-be-chosen non-profit to empower girls to pursue their dreams. If you would like to contribute, please email [email protected] and we will keep you updated on how to participate.

Nancy’s family would like to express their deep gratitude to her family and friends for their support during this time, along with Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home and the Turch Family. We would also like to thank Dr. Leena Tariq Rahmat and the entire Oncology team at Sibley Memorial Hospital for their dedication, compassion and support throughout Nancy’s battle with Lymphoma.
