On Sunday February 15th 2015, Linton Hall School’s (LHS) Fife & Drum Corps performed as part of Presidential Family Fun Day at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Composed of a tight-knit group of students, the LHS Fife & Drum Corps were the perfect choice for the Smithsonian’s Family Fun Day celebration.

In addition to the many families in attendance, numerous local mascots were on hand; representing the Washington Nationals baseball team were Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Abe Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt. But the real mascot draw was Mr. George Washington himself – the official Mt. Vernon mascot. In a special moment for the audience and students, Mr. Washington personally inspected each Fife & Drum Corps members’s uniform.

Motorists traveling through the intersection of Route 1, Route 17 Business and Route 218 (Butler Road) in Stafford County can expect brief overnight travel delays next week due to ongoing construction work to improve the Falmouth intersection.

Southbound Interstate 95 traffic will be affected next week by overnight lane closures at the Route 17 overpass in Stafford County at Exit 133/Falmouth, just north of the Rappahannock River bridge. 

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in the work zone. Crews will be repairing the bridge deck.  

Residents in the immediate vicinity of Marine Corps Base Quantico may experience an increase in noise as an affect from ground/aircraft training or range clearance operations during the week of Mar. 14-20.

Monday, Mar. 16 – Demolition training is scheduled 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

WSHS has come a long way since its first and only tournament in 2009 when a small team of 2 students finished dead last with 1 small robot made of borrowed parts. Now, WSHS stands ready to make its 4^th consecutive appearance at the VEX World Championships with the best robots the students have ever built.

Carlos Castro, PLTW Lead Instructor, leader and mentor to the team stated, “WSHS is proud of all of its robotics students. For the last seven months, they have been meeting for 2 to 3 hours almost every day after school, on weekends, and during school breaks to be able to build the best robots possible.”

Effective immediately, hospitals and health care systems lift the masking recommendation for patients and families entering area hospitals, freestanding emergency departments, urgent care centers, and branch clinics, including those seeking outpatient services at hospitals. This recommendation has been in place since December 23, 2014, when flu reached the highest level noted by public health. This measure was put in place to help limit the spread of flu during a time when the vaccine was a poor match the circulating strains.

According to the latest public health reports, seasonal flu activity has declined to regional levels in Virginia and North Carolina. With flu no longer at the highest level, health systems lift the masking recommendation for patients and families.

Students at Grace E. Metz Middle School will take part in a program on Friday, March 13th at 6:30 p.m. to celebrate Black History Month.  The theme of the program is, “Remembering Our Past, Inspiring Our Future.”

“The program is a great opportunity for our students to engage in learning about African American History,” said Eneida Thomas, who is the 7th grade Assistant Principal at Metz. “Also, it is a great opportunity for the community to see our wonderful students in action.”

With Interstate 95 and primary roads clear in the Fredericksburg District, crews are concentrating this evening on plowing and treating subdivision streets and low-volume secondary roads.

Conditions on secondary roads in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and western Middle Peninsula are improving, but motorists should be prepared for areas of trace ice and snow.

Motorists are encouraged to delay travel until later today if possible as Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews work to break up and remove packed down ice and snow from primary roads in the Fredericksburg area and Northern Neck.   

VDOT is using a mix of sand, salt and liquid calcium chloride to combat leftover snow that is frozen to the pavement. Liquid calcium chloride is used to assist with ice melt when temperatures are below 27 degrees.
