Prince William Humane Society of Prince William County, VA today announced it has been awarded a $7500 grant from the Petco Foundation to support its Warrior Buddies, Wounded Heroes Program that matches homeless shelter dogs with wounded service members and trains them to the specific needs of that wounded hero, ultimately becoming a therapy or service dog team.

Prince William Humane Society is a nonprofit organization that has been serving Prince William County, VA since 2012.  Prince William Humane Society is an all-volunteer organization whose express mission is promoting animal welfare and adoption for the homeless pets located in Prince William County, VA.  This goal is accomplished by advocating for the homeless animals, supporting adoption programs, providing financial assistance when possible and elevating public awareness.  The Prince William Humane Society helps support animal welfare organizations; including the Prince William County Animal Shelter and works diligently to help save lives by creating and implementing new programs designed to reduce euthanasia and substantially increase adoptions.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015, the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration, Partners on Aging-TRIAD, and the Stafford Hospital Center will hold a National Drug Take Back Initiative.  

The National Take Back Initiative is a collaborative effort focused on removing potentially dangerous controlled substances from medicine cabinets all over the country. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., citizens may drop off expired, unwanted or unused pharmaceutical controlled or non-controlled substances and other medications to Stafford deputies for destruction at the Stafford Hospital Center, located at 101 Hospital Center Blvd. in Stafford.

Over the coming weeks, the Prince William Republican Committee is conducting a back-to-school supply drive to benefit the County’s neediest students, and the Committee Chairman invites the community to join the service project.

Any Prince William County resident can participate in the Committee’s Community Service Initiative no matter what their political affiliation is. This community service project is part of a year-long Community Service Initiative that has become a focus for Prince William Republicans.


Obituaries

Vanessa Darden Boone, 61, passed away on Monday afternoon, August 10, 2015, at her home in Leesburg, VA with family and friends at her bedside. Vanessa was born on October 11, 1953 in Newport News, VA to the late Kelly M. Darden, Sr. and Nessa Faltz Darden.

Vanessa retired at the rank of Major from the U.S. Air Force in 1995 after 20 years of honorable service. After retiring from the Air Force, Vanessa was employed as a Systems and Project Engineer for Lockheed Martin Corp thru 2010, and the SI Organization from 2010 thru 2013. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics in 1975 from the University of Virginia (UVA), in Charlottesville, VA; a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Information Systems from Strayer University in 1997; and two Master of Arts Degrees from Webster University in Management and Public Administration (1981) and in Computer Resources and Information Management (1995 – Distinguished Graduate). Vanessa graduated from George Washington Carver High School in Newport News, VA as Valedictorian of her class in 1971.

The Lake Ridge Moms Club Open House is Thursday, September 3 at 7:30pm in the Tall Oaks Community Center (12298 Cotton Mill Dr. Wood bridge, VA). The Lake Ridge Moms Club is open to all moms, even if you don’t live in Lake Ridge. We have monthly general meetings with themes and activities on the first Thursday of each month, monthly Moms Night Outs, weekly playgroups, community service opportunities, family gatherings and holiday parties, and a babysitting co-op. Please come out and meet some new ladies for a fun night with light refreshments and amazing raffle prizes.
