According to Prince William police, the tractor-trailer truck was on fire, causing delays on Gordon Boulevard and Devil’s Reach Road on Thursday evening.

A truck was in flames in Lake Ridge last week. On the evening of Thursday, September 3, a Potomac Local reader reported that they witnessed a truck engulfed in flames.

Local jazz powerhouse, the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, returns to the Hylton Performing Arts Center with a soaring celebration of two of America’s greatest inventions – jazz and aviation – in the world premiere of Paul Glenshaw’s “To Swing Through the Sky.” This unparalleled evening features exuberant dance, an insightful narrative and the swinging sounds of big band music as it celebrates the legacies of great American innovators like Louis Armstrong and Charles Lindbergh. The Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra’s “To Swing Through the Sky” is at the Hylton Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 3 at 8 p.m.

Born just one year apart, Louis Armstrong and Charles Lindbergh took very different directions in life, but both encapsulated the spirit of innovation and exploration at the dawn of the 20th century.  Louis Armstrong, one of the most influential improvisers in jazz history, taught the world to swing with his stunning music and joyful performances. Aviator Charles Lindbergh took the boundaries of aviation to new heights by completing the first solo transatlantic airplane flight.  The unique concert celebrates Armstrong, Lindbergh and the many creators and thinkers who rode a wave of new American energy that changed the world and inspired generations that followed.

Virginia Senator Charles “Chuck” Colgan will be honored with a Gala Tribute on Friday evening, September 25, 2015, at the Hylton Performing Arts Center on George Mason University’s Science and Technology Campus.  The event coincides with the Senator’s 89th birthday.  Individual tickets and Sponsorships are available to the community.     

The festive evening will kick off with a reception at 6:30pm in the Hylton Center’s Didlake Grand Foyer and Gregory Family Theatre.  A “This is Your Life” themed program will begin at 7:30pm in Merchant Hall, where a variety of elected officials and private individuals will pay tribute to Senator Colgan and his storied career in both aviation and public service.

Betty Ann Mejia-Fraley, 59, formerly of Dumfries, Virginia, died, Tuesday, September 1, 2015, at her home in Middletown, Virginia.

Mrs. Mejia-Fraley was born in 1955, in Ohio, the daughter of Francisco Mejia and the late Eileen Mejia. She was a graduate of Woodbridge High School, Class of 1973.

Local 2598 Prince William Professional Fire Fighters in conjunction with the Prince William County Police Association will be hosting the second annual Prince William Cup charity soccer tournament on September 27th at Patriot High School at 10504 Kettle Run Road, Nokesville.  The 27th is planned to be a FREE public safety community day with two soccer games as the background.  There will be 50/50 raffles, food, car seat checks, DJ, fire trucks, police cruisers, bounce houses and various events just to name some of the fun.

This event has been several months in the making, with semi-final games being held on September 13th.  The 27th is planned to be the consolation game at 1pm followed by the championship at 3pm.  The police and fire departments have both put together two teams, each team playing for worthy charities.

On Sunday, September 20, 2015, the Virginia Leadership Institute will host a reception to honor and recognize the achievements of Dr. Michael Otaigbe, the Prince William County School Board Member representing the Coles Magisterial District. The community is invited to attend and celebrate the contributions of Dr. Otaigbe as his service on the Board comes to end.

The reception will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Northern Virginia Community College Woodbridge Campus Lakeside Theatre Auditorium (15200 Neabsco Mills Rd, Woodbridge, VA).
