The Prince William Board of County Supervisors recently approved authorization for the County to enter into an agreement with the Town of Dumfries to administer the U.S. 1-Fraley Boulevard widening project and allocate up to $4-million to pay for the ongoing project design.

The construction of the project, expected to begin in late 2024, will expand U.S. 1 in the Town of Dumfries to a six-lane road with pedestrian and bicycle facilities on the northbound side. The project will also convert the southbound side into a two-lane road for local traffic through the Town.

Salamanders can indicate the health of upland, wooded environments, as well as the health of areas surrounding waterways.

Some of the waterways in Prince William County include streams, which were restored primarily to keep sediment out of the Chesapeake Bay, but it is uncertain if a restored stream makes a good habitat for salamanders and other amphibians.

The Route 1 northbound traffic shift at the Potomac Creek bridge in Stafford County is now set for Friday, March 5 after being postponed last month.

Both northbound travel lanes will remain open. But as construction on the bridge replacement project enters the next phase, northbound traffic will be shifted around 20 feet to the right to cross Potomac Creek. This shift allows crews to build the northbound lanes on the new bridge.

The Virginia General Assembly has passed a budget that includes Delegate Elizabeth Guzman’s amendment to allow undocumented women access to pre-natal care through FAMIS.

“Health care is a human right, and I am so happy that Virginia will allow women to access pre-natal care regardless of immigration status,” said Delegate Guzman, who is the first Latina immigrant elected to the General Assembly. “Many of these women are essential workers who have kept this country running throughout the pandemic. I want them to know they are seen and valued and that they should get medical care before giving birth. Furthermore, this budget amendment will actually save the Commonwealth money, so it is a commonsense move. I thank the House Appropriations Committee and the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee for including this measure in their budgets. I am also grateful to Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy for working with our office on this issue over multiple legislative sessions.”
