Candice Bennett, a small business owner, has announced her candidacy for the Mt. Vernon District Supervisor seat. Bennett is hoping to take over the seat from the long time incumbent Gerry Hyland, who has held the office since 1988.
She received her Masterâs degree in security policy studies from George Washington University. Bennett is a graduate of the Sorensen Campaign Training Program, Leadership Fairfax and the Tuck Executive Education program at Dartmouth, according to a release.
Bennett currently operates a consulting firm in Lorton and was previous a director at Penn, Schoen and Berland â a well-known Democratic polling firm in Washington D.C. During her time at the polling firm, she worked with several elected officials including Senator Tim Kaine.

Tonight at 7 p.m., Stafford will be hosting a public hearing at the Falmouth Fire Station to hear from residents about the design of the upcoming phase 4 of the Belmont-Ferry Farm trail.
The trail, a 2,900 linear foot, 10-foot wide asphalt trail along River Road in Fredericksburg, has been a work in progress since the 90s, according to Chris Hoppe, a project manager for the county.
The work being done to develop the Belmont-Ferry Farm trail is a part of the countyâs ten-point plan to increase tourism and economic development.

Prince William County Attorney Angela Horan has been promoted and will be appointed as a judge on the countyâs district court, starting July 1.
Horan, who has served as Prince William's top legal advisor for the past six years, will be replacing one of the two county judges who will be moving to the Circuit Court.
While she has served as the countyâs attorney for 6-years, sheâs been working in the office for close to 29-years.

Starting March 17, local photographer and artist Hannele Lahtiâs work will be displayed at Manassas City Hall.
Her photograph exhibit that will be features is called âEbb & Flowâ and focuses on movement in photography.
The exhibit will run until April 24. Each month the city displays art exhibits from a new artist at the hall, and can be viewed from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

After recent decision by the Rappahannock Regional Solid Waste Management Board (R-Board) to charge disposal fees at a landfill Stafford, more trash has been spotted along streets leading to the landfill.
Stafford County Supervisors Meg Bohmke and Paul Milde have both fielded complaints from several residents about the recent uptick in litter theyâve seen in their communities since the fee structure became active.
âI know of two cases myself. One was a mattress that was put outsideâŠbut the other one that I know of was I believe on Eskimo Hill Road â somebody dumped some boxes,â Bohmke said.

A 36-year old man from Manassas, identified as Juan Orellana, died yesterday afternoon in a car crash in Henrico County.
The 2006 Ford van Orellana was driving ran off the road and hit a tree on I-295 at the 46-mile marker, according to a release from Virginia State Police.
According to the release, Virginia State Police Trooper M. Tudor investigated the crash.

The City of Manassas has released an alert related to a new payment scam being used on residents in the area.
âIn this scam, the caller tells the resident or business that he/she is with the City of Manassas Power Company disconnect team and that they will cut off the personâs power if the resident does not buy a pre-paid gift card and call them back with the number on the card,â said Patty Prince, Communications Manager for the city, in a release.
Many of the scam calls took place during the winter weâve had during the past few weeks â a time when many residents are vulnerable.

The Prince William County Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting their second summer camp job fair this Saturday in Manassas.
The fair will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the George Hellwig Administrative Building on Bristow Road.
According to Lisa Herr, Childrenâs Program Manager for the parks department, the purpose of the job fair is to hire experienced staff for their upcoming summer camp programs in the county.

The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) held a public hearing this week in Stafford to talk about a potential 4% increase in fare prices.
There were four attendees at the meeting to ask questions and express their opinions about the fare increase.Â
The VRE released the list of submitted questions and statements from the meeting to Potomac Local, but answers to these questions will not be available until later, for VREâs overall record.

Stafford County Administrator Anthony Romanello presented his proposed fiscal year 2016 budget to the Stafford County Board of Supervisors at their meeting Tuesday.
Among the key points in the proposal were that no changes in tax rates were suggested. The real estate tax will remain at $1.019, the same rate as last year, according to Stafford County spokeswoman Shannon Howell.Â
According to Howell, the average tax bill for a Stafford resident would be $2,731.Â
