
Franconia, Va. –– Metro set an all-time new Saturday ridership record during The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear.
While the public transit agency faced many issues the day of the rally, it still did not eclipse the record set during the most recent Presidential Inauguration.
Saturday’s event put on my John Stewart and the Comedy Central cable TV network drew more than 200,000 to the nation’s capital over the weekend, according to initial reports.
Metro registered 825,437 passenger trips on Saturday, making it the largest number of people ever to ride the subway on a Saturday since a Gulf War rally in 1991, according to a Metro spokeswoman. Read More

Hunt for a rapist continues
One year later, police are still looking for the man believed to have raped two girls, ages 16 and 17, while another girl watched, behind Glendale Plaza in Dale City on Halloween in 2009, Insidenova.com reports. Â DNA evidence later collected from the scene linked the crime to 12 other attacks on 16 other women along the east coast.
High fashion
A sophomore at Northern Virginia Community College’s Woodbridge campus has an eye for fashion, and big dreams of taking her love for clothes and studying in New York City, the NOVA Fortnightly reports.

The Rally to Restore Sanity and or Fear wrapped up on the National Mall at 3 p.m.
Early crowd estimates showed as many as 400 million, but those estimates which came via Twitter quickly fell to 10 million.
And though the National Park Service which is in charge of the National Mall does not do official head counts during rallies, it’s rumored they suspect 200,000 showed up to get a dose of John Stewart’s “reasonable sanity.” Read More

Fairfax County, Va. –– Virginia transportation officials Friday opened a fourth lane on Interstate 95 south in Fairfax County prior to the start of the afternoon rush hour.
The newly-constructed lane runs about five miles, between Fairfax County Parkway and U.S. 1 just before Woodbridge, and is part of the $123 million effort to widen the highway to ten lanes between the parkway and the Occoquan River. Read More

An employee arriving at the National Museum of the Marine Corps on Friday morning found the damage caused by the latest round of shots fired at the building.
Those shots were believed to have come between 9 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday from the west side of the museum,which faces Interstate 95, said Prince William police spokesman Mike Crosbie.
No one was inside the building when it was hit, and bullet holes were found on the same side of the building that was damaged when shots were fired there Oct. 17. Read More

Woodbridge, Va. –– A string of volunteers showed up to clean up the winter shelter on Potomac Mills Road.
Volunteers spent the morning picking up trash consisting of glass bottles, cans, and other recyclables from the wooded directly behind the shelter, including a heavily littered creek bed.
A total of 31 volunteer hours were spent removing 1,180 pounds of trash from around the shelter.
North Stafford –– A new center for technology and education may be coming to Boswells Corner’s expanding Quantico Corporate Center.
Stafford County officials , University of Mary Washington, George Mason University and Germanna Community College officials today all signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the possibility of building a new technology education center on Corporate Drive.
As part of the three-year agreement, officials from the respective organizations will examine the potential growth and demand of a technology center near Quantico Marine Corps Base. Read More
