Lorton, Va. –– It will be a day of service Monday for volunteers looking to raise awareness of the dangers of house fires.

Voluntters will gather at 9 a.m., on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, in several locations in the area including the Lorton Volunteer Fire Department and Dumfries Town Hall. From there they will canvass surrounding neighborhoods and distribute free information on how to prevent house fires.

The event will last until 2 p.m.,  and it marks the third year in a row the American Red Cross National Capital Region and Hope worldwide have sent volunteers to distribute the information.

Of the multiple disasters the Red Cross is called to each year, 94 percent of them are house fires, said Red Cross National Capital spokeswoman Cheryl Kravitz.

Fairfax County, Va. ––One of the first projects that could benefit from Gov. Robert F. McDonnell’s proposed statewide transportation plan is the Interstate 95/395 High Occupancy Toll lanes.

As part of the plan, among other things, McDonnell proposed this week issuing $3 billion (possibly up to $4 billion) in bonds to fund transportation in the state, as well as take a percentage from sales tax collected in Northern Virginia and putting it into a regional transportation account.

OmniLink switch buses at the Potomac Rappahannock Transportation Center in Woodbridge.

Woodbridge, Va. –– The expansion of the Horner Road commuter lot in Woodbridge may provide some relief for commuters that will no longer be able to park at Potomac Mills mall.  But it won’t come fast enough to help those who will be put out on February 14.

Potomac Mills announced Thursday it would curtail commuter parking in their lots by 75 percent beginning Valentine’s Day. Afterward, mall managers suggested putout commuters take the bus.

But that may not be an option for many who would board OmniRide commuter buses near the mall, as nearly all of those early morning buses are full. Read More

When Virginia’s 2011 General Assembly session began Wednesday in Richmond, state legislators got a somber reminder about the shooting of Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Update 5 p.m.
We now know a bit more about why Potomac Mills mall decided to drastically reduce the amount of commuter parking there.

In a statement issued by the mall, officials say an increased demand for employee and customer parking, as well as the anticipated addition of several new retailers and restaurants in the coming year has driven the need to reduce the number of parking spaces commuters use each weekday by 75 percent from when commuter parking there was at its peak.

Officials at the mall urged commuters to explore alternatives ways of getting to work, such as those provided by Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission’s OmniRide commuter bus.

Occoquan Reservoir

Fairfax County, Va. ––If you live along the Occoquan Reservoir, there may be some changes coming that will dictate what you can do with your property.

Fairfax Water will hold a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday February 3 to discuss updates to their easement plans for those with homes along the body of water, which separates portions of Prince William and Fairfax counties.

Some of the new regulations awaiting approval prohibit residents from putting debris in the reservoir, requiring residents to plant vegetation along the shoreline to prevent erosion, and new regulations that permit stairs along the shoreline where grades are at 10 percent or greater.

Fairfax officials are accepting comments on the matter until Feb. 2. You can email them to [email protected].

Woodbridge District Supervisor Frank J. Principi

It’s time to tell Woodbridge District Supervisor Frank J. Principi what’s on your mind.

The county supervisor on Wednesday on his Twitter account said he would hold a telephone town hall meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday January 25.

There is no word yet on how many people are expected to participate, or what number residents will dial to take part in the telephone conference.

According to Tele-Town Hall’s website, those who participate in Tele-Town Halls are able to pose questions and get answers from politicians while using their technology.

The firm says thousands of politicians nationwide use the Tele-Town Hall service.
