You won’t be charged to get into a National Park this weekend, and free admission is what park officials hope will draw more residents into the parks.

All week, visitors to all 394 National Parks in the U.S. have waived their entrance fees, including Prince William Forest and Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania parks, as part of National Park Week 2011.

In 2007, as I was campaigning to be your locally elected representative on the Board of County Supervisors, I brought a ferry to Woodbridge from Boston to promote the use of a commuter ferry service up the Potomac River. During this time, we conducted several runs and were able to complete the Quantico to Navy Yard run in under 55 minutes one-way, giving us hope that a commuter ferry option was feasible as another viable transit alternative to help alleviate gridlock on our roads. I also brought a ferry here in 2009 and replicated the service time for a series of origin/destination pairs.

Virginia authorities will once again take part in a prescription drug-take back day on Saturday, April 30.

Last September, officials in the state collected more than 5,000 pounds of prescription drugs from residents looking to clean out their medicine chests of old pills, as well as prevent those pills from getting into the hands of youths and others who might abuse them.
