WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Would you know what to do in a tornado? The key is to plan now for what to do in an emergency. Join Prince William County Government in participating in the annual Tornado Preparedness Day Drill in March to practice taking cover from tornadoes.

Last year, 51 tornadoes hit Virginia, the second highest number on record. Ten people died, more than 100 were injured, and 212 homes and 17 businesses were destroyed. Nearly every part of the state was affected, including northern Virginia.

LAKE RIDGE, Va. — It’s the final week for the Lake Ridge Neighborhood Library before its current location closes.

Prince William County Library officials said the location will close Monday as workers prepare to move the library’s contents to a new location inside nearby Tacketts Mill shopping center, at 2230 Old Bridge Road in Lake Ridge.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — The Boys & Girls Club’s Youth of the Month program encourages good citizenship and civic responsibility. Adult mentoring and guidance reinforce the disciplines needed for a life of public service.

Each month, staff selects a Youth of the Month who demonstrates exemplary character and often serve as leaders to their peers. The Youth of the Months for March of the 2011-2012 school year are Jada Thomas, Emily Mills, and Zainay Akanbi.

RICHMOND, Va. — Recreational trail grants ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 are now available to nonprofit organizations and government entities. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation has approximately $1 million to award in trails grants through the Recreational Trails Program. The deadline for preliminary applications is April 13, 2012 at 4 p.m.

The Recreational Trails Program is a federal matching reimbursement grant program established to provide and maintain recreational trails and trails-related facilities. The program requires a 20 percent match from applicants.

QUANTICO, Va. — Thanks to the popularity of television shows like American Idol and America’s Got Talent, the Quantico Middle/High School drama department put on their own talent show, called “Quantico’s Got Talent,” in the school’s auditorium on March 2.

DALE CITY, Va. — Water and sewer rates could be going up for customers in eastern Prince William County.

Virginia American Water wants to raise rates by 15.9 percent for customers in the state. Customers in Prince William County could be hit hard by the increase, as the utility wants to raise rates in the portion of the county it serves by nearly 25 percent, according to a press release from the Prince William County government.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A construction worker was taken to a local hospital Monday after a roof collapsed today in in Woodbridge.

Fire and rescue crews were called to the 5600 block of Minnie Court, in the area of Spriggs and Minnieville roads, about 2 p.m. after the roof collapse. The roof was attached to a building that was under construction, said fire and rescue officials.

Stafford, Va. — Residents got their first glimpse of the proposed Stafford County operating budget for 2013.

The $246.6 million proposed budget comes in at $5.5 million more the current budget, and takes into account increases in employee payments to the Virginia Retirement System, an increase in maintenance cost to the county’s new emergency radio communications system, and increased costs to house prisoners at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
